Smitty

I think he is most upset with being a legit WR threat in an offense with no veritcal passing plans. Whether that is Davidson's elementary offense or lack of faith in a QB who knows. I suspect some of both. As long as you have Fox, Davidson and Delhomme I can't imagine attacting or retaining any FA's to come to Charlotte. But yea Smith is a hot head. Has always been a hot head even though he managed to contain it some.

A few? Try half a season. With no end in sight either. The only way they are trying to get him the ball is on screen passes that the entire defense knows are coming. That's his biggest problem with everything. They are trying to get him the ball by being the most predictable team in the NFL.

They threw him a deep ball late in the game. Smitty never even looked up for it. They threw him a ball where he gained 10-15 yards in the first half. He yelled at Davidson never to call it again.

His mind is not with this team any more. Which is a shame, because not too many teams would have given him as many chances as the Panthers have.

I agree with you, but from his perspective he is on the backside of his career and he is a guy who loves to prove everyone wrong, and he has the worst starting QB on a one dimensional team, would you be frustrated?

The throw down the field wasn't even close to where he was running. He looked up for it, and it was over the other shoulder by 5 yards or so. Had they both known it was going to that shoulder it would have been a catch. Don't know who to blame there.

The pass he was mad about was like a gain of 5 wasn't it? It just had a personal foul tacked onto it. And it was yet another screen pass just to get Smith the ball.

And I don't really know what you are talking about with "chances". He's been one of the best receivers in the NFL for quite some time. And now we can't get him the ball, we are losing. It's as simple as that.

He's punched out teammates on at least three occasions that I know of. The last one had the defense talking about payback in training camp. Would you get away with punching a coworker once?

Every time someone else on the team gets a big contract, Smitty goes into one of his snits.

He's talented enough that you could get something of value for him. The Panthers aren't going to the Super Bowl this year, with or without him. Send him somewhere else and fill your locker room with players who want to play for you. Fox proved in 04 that he can win with backups as long as they're all rowing in the same direction.

By this thought process, Fox has also proven he can't get to the playoffs without Smith.

But if we get rid of Smith, is Jarrett now our #1 receiver? You want a less-than-average QB throwing to what appears to be a draft bust? I dunno about that.

    • This is a toughie because I wonder what a guy like Canales thinks about redemption stories for addiction issues. Also, I think this is a case of 1 player getting caught, and not being naive enough to think this isn't more common in college than we think. I'd toss a 3rd rounder out there. 2026 is essentially a redshirt season regardless, so he's not taking over for any NFL QB next year. Best case, he's ready to go in 2027 if we pass on Bryce's extension. Worst case, he's our future backup QB2. Kid has the tools to be an NFL QB. I do think we could somehow land a '26 3rd round pick back in a trade. Our past years' third rounders are: Brazzell Princely Wallace DJ Johnson Matt Corral All this to say, I could see a team like the Jets going w/ a 2nd. They have three FRPs next year.
    • Alright man! We're here for it! Just glad you're keeping the doors open!
    • I think we've seen improvement in Bryce's performance. It still isn't up to world beater status, but in Canales defense, he can say that the limitations of the player were hit. I think he survives that even if Bryce doesn't. Still, I think it's a 50/50 shot for Bryce to make it. QB is one of the toughest jobs to do in the sports world, if not the most, so the failure rate is really high, no matter the pedigree. Heck, Archie Manning gets a lot of credit as a great QB but anyone who saw his career in motion knows he wasn't really that good and he was surrounded by bottom of the bowl players. He did get it figured out with his sons, though. That grandson... maybe.
