GM Candidate Profiles

Mr. Scot

I'm surprised that we haven't heard Jack Del Rio as a candidate for a HC position.  He had some good years with Jacksonville.  Rivera was smart to hire him as a DC and maybe Jack is happy in that role.

Some men figure out that they are better at a coordinator than a HC.

From what I've seen, most of this year's best head coaching candidates not named Robert Saleh are offensive guys, with Eric Bieniemy and Arthur Smith being prime names.

For what it's worth, Saleh has reportedly said that if he got a head coaching job, he'd love to have Adam Peters as his GM. That combo might be a possibility in any of the four cities that have dual openings.

Sounds like we need to grab Peters before Detroit takes him away.

Any updates on when the Panthers plan on starting the interview process?

Nothing official, but I'd imagine they'll start reaching out as of Monday.

Some of the candidates are affiliated with teams that aren't making the playoffs, so there won't be any restrictions on when they can interview.

(there will for Ireland if they want him, of course; availability for Ed Dodds is still up in the air)

From Albert Breer's latest mailbag (link)

Conversely, I think the Panthers could go either way, with an evaluator or a cap/analytics type for their vacant GM job. If it they choose the former path, with Matt Rhule carrying a big stick in the organization, there are names we’ve connected with him this week. One is Saints assistant GM Jeff Ireland, a Baylor alum who I’ve heard Rhule respects greatly. Another is 49ers VP Adam Peters, who played for Rhule at UCLA 20 years ago, and has maintained a relationship with him.

But I do think that owner David Tepper at least wants to look on the other side of the fence. He had interest in Andrew Berry last year before Berry took the Cleveland job. So one name to watch is Browns VP of football operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. While he’s not a big name, the guys in San Francisco rave about him, and he was among Berry’s most important hires in Cleveland.

Rhule has made clear he wants a talent evaluator. If Tepper inserts himself into the process though, it could go sideways.

I don't think Breer has looked at the staff. Tepper has hired a cap specialist and an analytics guy in the past year. It would make no sense to hire Rhule and say he's your guy, move on from Hurney to get someone to partner with Rhule that isn't what Rhule wants while being redundant.
