Hey guys. Hope y’all are enjoying the draft. (I posted this on the draft board, you’re welcome to delete that one. Meant to post this here.)

I had a pretty good sense last week that Horn might be their guy, talking to a few people who evaluate around the league. 

Just to give you some perspective: a league scout told me last week that he viewed Surtain very much like Bradberry, similar traits. Not as dynamic athletically, but quite good. 

Farley was their CB1 for a while, until the back stuff came up. 

Horn was always viewed as the the guy with “the highest ceiling of all the CB’s and a day one producer.” They think he can erase things on the perimeter. Man/zone. Fearless in run support, needs a little work on technique. 

 

I was told, unequivocally, that Mac Jones was never going to be taken at 8. This is from somebody who would know.

Again, I’m not telling you to love or hate the pick, just giving you some perspective from folks I’ve talked to. 

Keep an eye on safety and tackle today. Trading back for more picks is still on their radar, too.

Picking Horn was the right pick once Sewell got snatched.  Those that hated have tunnel vision for their favorite QB.  Like I mentioned before there were really only two maybe three QB' worth taking in the top 10.  Those being Sunshine, Wilson and maybe Jones depending on the system. That doesn't mean that some team wouldn't reach for one.  

I'm happy hear they had eyes on Sewell as their top target at 8.  It's not like they ignored OT completely.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they are able to do tonight as the draft unfolds.  It will be the first time I have watched the draft after the first since MH came back.

I've heard more than one analyst refer to Horn as a Seahawks type tackle. Makes sense obviously given our GM's background.

Yep. They were enamored with the idea of locking down half the field while generating pressure with what is suddenly a very good pass rushing front.

Very much the Seattle model.

Justin was considered, but trade back was considered more, from what I hear.

      Yeah, I'm serious. You take all of the first year jitters any rookie QB starting will face. Then you put him behind an inept line, give him a group of WRs that features a 32-33 year old slot receiver as their only reliable guy and use him as WR1, no TEs to speak of, pay big bucks for an undersized and over-touted RB that isn't out competing practice squad players AND THEN pair it up with a dysfunctional owner/HC/OC combo that keeps running the same play concept again and again and again. (And coaches that were already at each other's backs with daggers don't develop young QBs... heck it's the hardest skill ever for any HC.. Jon Gruden never could do it and there's a case to be made that Belichick never did it (the QB developing the coach possibly there)). Yeah, he was bad, legendarily bad, but he was in possibly the worst environment imaginable for a rookie QB. You can take away some mechanics issues that should have been worked on and still need to be worked on, but everything else was tainted by that environment.  I wasn't impressed by him in the least for anything except for his character and willingness to go back out there and just get killed again and again. At least he wasn't running away on every play, little girly screams lifting to the cheap seats, like Pickles was.  Will he be good this year? Honestly, the odds are stacked against him. They are on every young QB in the league, and he had more piled against him. Maybe Canales can fix him and the team. I sure hope so. If not, it's back to the drawing board and we'll have wasted two seasons. I really don't want that to happen.

      All this talk of the supporting cast and coaching being the culprits of our struggles is just sounding like the rationalizations of Sam Darnold's time with the Jets. I'm ready to see the results and know what we have. Enough talk. Thank goodness June is finally upon us.
