Both Texas and Oklahoma gave Big XII notice they will not be renewing their media rights deal with the BIGXII.  Setsup their exit for the SEC.  BIG XII is pretty much dead.

Isn’t basically anyone who is anyone moving to the SEC? I heard rumors Ohio state and Michigan are moving there too. It would make things interesting cause no more near perfect records for the top teams if they all have to compete against each other.

Oklahoma and Texas officially notified the Big 12 on Monday that they will not be renewing their grants of media rights after their expiration in 2025, according to a joint statement released by both schools.

Big 12 sources told ESPN on Monday that the statement leaves some "wiggle room" and doesn't fully guarantee that the flagship schools would remain in the league through 2025. The possibility remains that they will pay the $75-80 million penalty for leaving early, while also giving the required 18 months' notice, per Big 12 bylaws. Some have speculated that this is the first legal maneuver, and the possibility also exists that if the Big 12 dissolves before 2025, OU and Texas would no longer be bound to stay through the duration of the contract.

NCAA should work to keep the conferences regional.

Honestly, the NCAA should just fug right the fug off. Major college football and basketball masquerading as "amateur athletics" is a farce literally no one believes. Everyone involved is making bank except the actual players. The highest paid public employee in nearly every state is a college football or basketball coach at a public university.

Wvu athletic director  statement

https://wvusports.com/news/2021/7/26/general-statement-from-wvu-director-of-athletics-shane-lyons.aspx?fbclid=IwAR11Y1OJ3vzExqvPk3Va6364IVeG38_brsdx1OawaK-856tBDEzM6mkzhWk

For the past nine years, West Virginia University has been a loyal member of the Big 12 Conference. We have valued the partnership with the other nine members and have served the league as a prestigious academic institution and a nationally recognized athletics program. We are disappointed that two of our Big 12 institutions have indicated their intent not to extend their media rights beyond 2025.

West Virginia University's top priority continues to be our student-athletes. We are focused on ensuring that we provide opportunities to elevate their academic and athletic experiences at WVU. However, in addition to our student-athletes, we also understand the impact this announcement has on our University, our state and our Mountaineer fans around the world. We will continue to be highly engaged and extremely diligent in finding connections that strengthen our academic mission and allow our student-athletes to thrive in one of the most successful athletics programs in the country.

WVU is proud to be a proven academic leader ranking at the highest level of research activity in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. In fact, we are among a select few that are land-grant, doctoral research universities with a comprehensive medical school. The University's faculty are increasingly recognized for excellence, and our legacy of student achievement includes 25 Rhodes Scholars, 25 Truman Scholars, 46 Goldwater Scholars.

We also are proud that during these past nine years, our athletic programs have competed at the highest levels, winning multiple championships and crowning numerous student-athletes on the biggest stage of their respective sports. We have excelled in the classroom and built an infrastructure that is attracting elite student-athletes world-wide. We have created an atmosphere of Mountaineer hospitality, rooted in sportsmanship and fellowship. We thank each one of you for being a part of what makes Mountaineer Nation so special.

As was stated earlier by the Big 12 Conference, athletics is an ever-changing landscape. We look forward to working with our colleagues in the Big 12 and across the country to navigate this new terrain. Together, we will continue to Climb Higher!

Shane Lyons
Director of Athletics, Associate Vice President

Agreed.

The standard college football season is 12 games.  (Fine - some play one or two fewer, some might play one or two more.  but let's stick with 12 for the conversation)

What's the maximum number of teams that you could reasonably have within a conference and still keep the high profile/high profitable rivalry and meaningful in-conference games?

And let's not forget that there are those throwaway games for homecoming or "warmups" (hello, Mercer or GA State vs Alabama) that rely on big paydays for being perennially steamrolled that may lose those beneficial slots because a conference became so large that there was no room for non-division games (or Notre Dame) to be squeezed in.

Take an example:  which one of these Alabama games would you sacrifice to make room for Michigan in a "required" annual rotation?   ('Bama used as an example. Clemson or other major ACC/SEC school would have similar issues)

Now that players can benefit from their NIL(or what ever it’s called) I believe we are going to see all the big schools align into one conference and negotiate much more akin to an NFL deal while nearly every other school is going to drop off the radar nationally. NCAA gotta protect them profits somehow.

    • I don't think so. I think once you're measuring electronically, the spot is where the sensor says it is. So if it says half yard short of the line to gain, that's the spot. Now how that works with scrums and the ball moving on two minute drills and poo is anybody's guess.
