Are people really STILL defending the decision to stick with Jake going into '09?

I don't think that a lot of people are defending Fox and Hurney for not having a viable option. Its more that a lot of people are coming to realize what the actual situation was and what our options were.

The Delhomme extension was not a great idea but there wasn't any cap space without it because Pep had us strapped to the table. As far as bringing in other QB's they brought in Carr, which everyone loved but he was forced to play too soon and it didn't work. They have brought in McCown, who I think would be a good QB for what this team wants to do. Which is keeping a D honest and only asking a QB to win in the last 2 mins if he has to. They had Moore in the stable, I don't think that the staff was or is too high on him but he is a good 3rd string QB.

As far as drafting a QB goes, the team believes in BPA draft strategy. Especially after the first round. Sometimes that leaves us as fans scratching our heads and the team wanting in some positions. I also don't think that they are too worried about drafting a QB because of the type of QB that they are looking for. More of a game manager, just someone good enough to keep the D honest. It is usually easier and cheaper to find that guy in FA than in the draft.

The thing that I am most upset about is how quickly they pulled the trigger on putting McCown on IR. That was a panic move that I am sure they wish they could take back. As far as sticking with Delhomme for this year, he was more expensive to cut this year than to restructure and there were not a lot of FA options and the draft was not a deep draft for QB's.

It was a gross miscalculation by the FO and Fox on Delhomme's ability. However in all reality, with our cap situation the last few years there was not a lot to be done.

As you say we needed the cap room and this was a contract we could use to do it. The 20 million guaranteed number thrown around is not a big number for a 5 year contract. The average quarterback in the NFL makes almost 10 million dollars a year and Jake was going to make 10 million in 2009 no matter what. Whether we should have extended him or not is a great debate after the fact but throughout last year he gave little reason to believe he wasn't going to recover physically which he seems to have done. His overthrows to Smitty suggest to me that arm strngth isn't the issue. Accuracy and confidence are something else.

Totally agree on the McCown IR decision. A bad idea in hindsight. Frankly I remember thinking it was a bad idea at the time. It just reconfirms the lack of faith in Moore. If they thought he could do the job they would have kept McCown active.

I would like Fox to prove to me that Moore is not capable of performing then I would be on the Jake bus for sure. The fact is if we never see more of Moore we will never know.....

Fox is proving to you that Moore is not capable of performing by not playing him and by overreacting when McCown went down and putting him on IR.

I've said it before and I will say it again. If you think that Fox would be willing to tank the whole season and possibly his career just to let Delhomme start you are an idiot. If Moore was the superstar that everyone on here thinks he is then someone on the team would have at least "leaked" it to the press that Fox is purposefully holding him back because he loves Delhomme so much. Don't even bring up the "He wants to validate the contract so he doesn't look stupid" defense either. The contract falls on Hurney and if Fox and Co. were capable of finding two undrafted starting QBs in thier tenure that would make him look a lot smarter than trying to validat the contract.

Sadly, Delhomme is our best option RIGHT NOW. Not the future but for now.

How do you play call continuous overthrown passes and standing in the lane of a bull rush without getting rid of the ball? My god you guys are thick!

Overthrow X 2 Pull Black 4 and Mac Truck right Y Z 11, are the first two plays on Delhomme's little white wristband. No poo.

SO you think that a coach, who is hired to make decisions with the goal of winning games, should put a player that he rates as inferior on the field because a couple of fans wan to see it? Maybe we should sit Smitty so we fans can get a look at Jarrett in the #1 role too?

I don't think you'll find many people that support the CONTRACT they gave to Jake...even among most Jake fans.

i didn't support it BEFORE the season started. it obviously looks stupid now. i agree to bring jake back as the starter. you couldn't drop him after the playoff loss but the way he played the second half of the season did not warrant the contract extension he got. 12 and 4 and winning the division warranted an extension, but not that one!

that being said, we should have done more knowing how bad our backups have been the past few years. i thought for sure we'd grab a decent late rounder or FA and we didn't.

we reap what we sow.

If Fox can't see that Jake is done and no longer needs to be on the field and see what Moore can do with the first string and start him, he is a moron...which he is.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
