The Panther's front office doesn't think winning year after year is important.

Sorry. No link but hear me out.

John Fox's worse record is 7-9. Not bad. Not great but not bad.

As we all know, your record determines your schedule the FOLLOWING year. Do great, chances are you play a tougher sked. You also matchup with similar teams who had similar results.

By going with an every other year approach you reduce the following:

Spending. The Panthers kinda distored their own spend thrift ways with Jake's near govt bailout contract and Pep being tagged(insert Tiger Woods joke here).

But they kept 21 of 22 on the roster. Why? All for 2010.

They trade "up" to avoid the 1st rd. Why? Cheaper 1st rder for...2010.

Now back to record. More than likely the Panthers will finish at best 7-9(umm, I'm ruling out winning out so I understand they "could) again, at worse 6-10.

I can't recall who they match up with next year but it will once again be a favorable sked.

The every other year approach also benefits gameplanning, scouting and front office wrangling. You build in a planning year similar to a teacher having a planning period during the school day.

Sure there is practice and training camp and laps and gatorade and press conferences and all the things teams are supposed to do.

I don't have an inside connection to confirm my observation or a sound bite or Fox on video saying this.

Of course anyone admiting this would be dropped like a three foot putt.

Sorry Stall. I agree with you a lot but I'm not with you on this one.

NFL teams rarely look beyond winning in the current season unless they're forced to do so by being in a rebuilding situation. That's not to say they don't plan for the future, but I seriously doubt any coach or front office in the league thinks to themselves "Let's tank this year so we can win next year."

And suppose you did? Do you believe you could get 53 players (plus practice squadders, plus guys that you cut) to go along and keep it quiet? Do it without their knowledge? Easier said than done? And why would a guy who sees his coach tanking this year turn around and be ready to go to war with that guy next season?

I think reality is that Fox with the Panthers is a coach who's good, just not quite good enough. Because he's good, he can get you those winning seasons and then those "close" seasons, but can't quite get you to the mountaintop.

Perhaps with a new team he can (ala Coughlin, Dungy, Vermeil and others who did it on their second chance) but I think the combo of Fox and the Panthers has gone as far as it can go. The best thing for both sides may be to get a new start.

For the last time. Im NOT saying its an out right conspiracy to TANK or lose.

What I AM saying is based on money and what needs/should be committed etc can get pushed back based on the current OVERALL market.

That can create an enviornment where its not as important to win year after year. Maybe only in the last year or so is the fanbase starting to want that more and more.

Which could be a good thing. People don't want to be so so but a consistent winner.

pear.

sigh..i mentioned the glass half empty/full awhile ago. But i mentioned that wasnt my contention as much as i see a glass and wonder how it was made and what can it do for me.

So the INTENTIONAL post of apples to add some levity to OUR perceptions to go along with the pear. But alas that didn't fly.

Today is one of those day's where the wavelength just ain't happening.

I say this, people hear that, fake left go right. Zigged should zagged.

Must remember to nap prior to posting after 4 hrs of sleep.

There are guys on every team for whom it will be their last, or only, season as a pro. Such an approach would clearly shortchange those guys.

Teams want winning seasons. Heck, teams would love undefeated seasons. It's just an incredibly difficult thing to accomplish.

    • If I'm Dan Morgan I stick with the plan because one step back doesn't erase all the progress that Bryce made last season.  That was a total team loss and Bryce shoulders most of the blame because he's the QB and people are emotional. The Huddle would blame a one legged man for losing a kicking contest. Fans don't want to build a team.  They want one already built and winning from the jump. After the crime scene of Bryce's first year Tepper cleaned house and got his offensive coach who has a history of building QB's.  Dave had the nuts to bench a #1 overall QB in order to help him.  I agreed at the time that if the first 2 games of last year were what Bryce is, then drafting him will go down as the worst in NFL history. Everyone is doing exactly what they did last year when Bryce was benched.  Freak out.  Calls to cut him.  Sky is falling.  But when Bryce started playing better, and some games at a very high level, people started chopping up that plateful of crow.  Then the whole team craps the bed in the first game of the year and all those same people double down. Dave and the coaching staff had a plan to reset him and bring him back.  They did.  He not only played better but played a lot better.  I've always said that as long as Bryce is making progress and getting better, you don't pull the plug.  Think of it like a stock.  It's not going up in a straight line.   Some of ya'll bring shame to our motto.  Dan, Bryce and the rest of the team need to do what they've been doing all of last year.  Building, getting better. If I was Dan, I'd keep pounding.
    • I expect Young to play better and the team to play better.  Week one is something I refuse to give much weight to, going back to when we had 4 preseason games.    All kinds of unpredictable outcomes happen week one. Seen it too many times to discount that. Since the 17 game schedule, I don’t pay much mind to results and how the units look until week 3. The units just need time to get the teamwork and timing together under real conditions. Not a series at 90% in preseason. That won’t do it. And it is hard to get around it.  But Frank is right when he points to the difference in how the offense looks with an NFL level arm behind center. Seattle in 2023, Vegas in 2024, were just liberating for the passing game.    This Bryce ball is no fun to watch unless he is having a day where  everything is clicking. Which I think we saw one time. Out of 29. Meh.
