Jake, Please give the Panthers the best chance to win in 2010

Not really in Jakes case his Contract is pretty much set. 13 million to jake no matter what. I'll try to find the article about it. His bonuses would still count against the team if he retires, since they were guaranteed. 6.25 of that was for this season, the rest would still be a cap hit if he retires since the 20 million was a guaranteed bonus.

Pretty much comes down to paying him around 12.7 million to keep him for the next few years or cutting him and Jake still getting that 12.7 million.

I don't know who you were replying to, but if it was me, I was just talking about players in general.

Jake won't be gone anyway. He will at LEAST be the #2. Can't we all be realistic?

Retiring, being cut or being traded are all the same thing in regards to salary cap in the NFL. So Carolina owes Jake 13 million no matter what. The reason for that is because of the signing bonus. (that's what we would owe jake if we cut him or he retired.)

Well that settles it; don't give bonuses!

I wasn't being serious, but you can honestly tell me that someone can just up and retire from the NFL and obviously screw the team that gave them the money? I mean, if it wasn't apparent, yeah, but if it was blatantly obvious (i.e., they admitted it or something), wouldn't they be ordered to give back the money? Just curious, really. I'm starting to think about impersonating a player and getting a contract re-negotiated (poking at that thread about impersonating Panthers players).

Do you really want Jake of all people to mentor him?

Sure. He doesn't need to tell Moore to throw like him. Just give him some pointer & confidence. Mentoring mean using your brain. Heck, DeAngelo gave Vinny some credit for making him a better RB than he has ever been last year. I'm sure Jake could do something like that. Beside, surely Jake can be a better QB coach than the guy we have right now name Rip, right? :P

    • Me and you clearly have different definitions of production. If you remove the 2023 season where Thielen had just over 1k yards he is 43rd on our all time receivers list just ahead of Jonathan Mingo. And before you ask why would we remove that season? Well a couple reasons. For one thing we won a whopping 2 games. And for the biggest. Thielen was 14th in targets in 2023. We absolutely force fed him the ball all season and finished with the 32nd passing offense. For comparison sake 33 year old Jerricho Cotchery eclipsed over 1k total yards in just 2 more games and with 67 less targets than Thielen did in that 2023 season. He has above average hands. That's it. We overpaid him because we were desperate and overvalued him. That's the reality no matter how many times you or anyone else wants to quote me and get defensive about it.
    • He's played great and it was a win-win (rare free agent) for both parties.  One of the points is he hasn't made enough difference to "waste" 35 million on. Another point is by the time Panthers are hitting their prime, he would have taken snaps away from young WRs/TEs/RBs. "Thus" in the long term, hurting the teams new future "window."  But I dare think of the monkey poo of a offense the Panthers had without him the past 2 years. Lack of talent leads to many problems, including paying a 35 year old to be somewhat respectable. Hes one of few that cared enough and made a effort. Plus you know he's done great stuff in many other ways for the team, community juggernaut, leadership, etc.  Judgement is for AT and his 3 year panther career!!
    • But it has gotten a little wacky. RBs-https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/_/position/rb     A couple months ago iggles made Bark the highest guaranteed RB, jeanty was until then. That's what matters the guarantee. A rookie never played a down was the leader, until iggles howie made things right.  If a safety gets drafted in the top 8 or so, he would have the highest money too or very close to it.    Add in TEs and C too.    Even with the fixed %, the numbers are getting too much for a player that's not proven themselves.     Plus anytime a QB is drafted it screws up the contracts for players around and if next year a punter gets drafted at the same 90th spot, they want the same contract with the 5.7% increase. Teams would be laughing.    Its just reached this point. Another 10 years and I bet the vets will be crying.
