Panthers QB Matt Moore: 'I'm not worried about making a statement'

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—Matt Moore followed up an outstanding effort last week—a 26-7 upset of the Vikings—with another sparkling performance in the Panthers' 41-9 victory over the Giants on Sunday. He completed 15-of-20 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Now in his third year in the NFL after being undrafted out of Oregon State, Moore talked matter of factly about his suddenly prominent role in the offense with Sporting News Today's Bill Eichenberger and other reporters.

Question: A lot of people usually have trouble with the wind at Giants Stadium, but you didn't. Why is that?

Matt Moore: Well, it wasn't as breezy as we thought it was going to be. Especially in the second half, it slowed down.

Q: How do you feel now with four consecutive starts and a couple wins in a row?

MM: I feel good. We just have to keep getting better week by week with the help of the other guys on the team. The offensive staff has been doing a great job.

Q: The Panthers converted 9-of-14 third-down chances Sunday. How important was it that they were all third-and-makeable distances for the most part?

MM: Third downs like that are obviously a lot better than third-and-longs. Every week we want to stay on third-and-short, and today we did that.

Q: You're now 3-1 as a starter this year. Did you made a statement about your potential Sunday?

MM: I think ultimately you want to win, however you can get it done. At the end of the day, that's the only stat that matters. So if we're winning and things are good, then I'm fine. I'm not worried about making a statement.

Q: You are friends with injured starter Jake Delhomme, but you're performing so well you could take his job in 2010. Have you thought about next year?

MM: No. I can't worry about that. We have one more game, and we have to finish strong. We're worried about this season. We're going to enjoy this and move on to the Saints. I don't get to make that decision anyway, so I'm not worried about that at all.

Q: Do you feel you have put yourself in the running for that starting job?

MM: Well, like I said, if we keep winning and doing well, then whatever the case may be, that's what it is. No, I don't think about that stuff.

-> Hopefully these interviews get more indepth so we can learn more about a guy who has been on teh team for several years yet NO ONE knows squat about him as a person.

i'm pretty sure he is thinking about that stuff. he wants the job and he should.

he's just saying the right things. jake is still on the team and very much an important part of it (for better or worse) and he still has a good bit of supporters. no sense in causing controversy right now when it doesn't need to be there. he's letting his playing and his growing confidence do most of the talking. the growing confidence the team has in him is doing all the rest of the talking for him.
