The funny thing is is that our kick returning sucks, but the Panthers have had a decent history of kick returners. First there was Bates, who was good enough to be on the NFL's 1990 all decade team. Then after he retired, Steve Smith came into the league... and we haven't had a decent return threat since...

rod smart really wasn't that great. 03 he was ok but nothing special. I do remember his TD against the saints. It was awsome to see an XFL guy score an NFL TD. Good to see a few players survived that trainwreck of a leauge.

Bates was good! He's definately one of my favorite returners... Its funny someone started this thread cause I played a GameDay 98 today on playstation 1 today against my cousin, and Bates was the returner... I cant believe how bad the graphics were... and to think that I use to think that was game was the heat!

I remeber Bates. Dude was a beast & got one hell of a speed. Glad he's still living, 'cause I thought I heard he die one time. Maybe that was the other Michael Bates. Who know.
