Peppers contract Situation Discussion Thread (Dpanthers started it (^-^))

Pep will be a Panther one way or another next season... I'm almost certain that will be the case considering the circumstances...

I'm sorry but I dont see it. Richardson is watching his money like a hawk. He is expecting a lockout in 2011 and I dont see Peppers agreeing to being franchised for 1 year.

The best route is finding a trade partner willing to pay him at least 20 mil a year. If they can't find one, then we are SOL. and will end up letting him go. Then we get the coveted compensatory 3rd round pick. Oh Lucky us. same deal we got for Kris Jenkins-- no actually we traded him right? and got a 3 and 4th i believe

I already told you this...

http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/carolina-panthers/27745-what-will-happen-in-an-uncapped-year-in-terms-everyday-panthers-fans-will-understand.html

The catch is that we'd pay Pep more than that in a first year salary, and if we can't get him to agree to it, we'll tag him...

. (1) One player that will have a first year salary of $4,925,000 or more, and

They can pay Pep whatever they want the first year.

To be honest with you, I think that despite the increased cost, this is a better year to franchise Peppers than last year. That is, as long as you franchise him with an eye toward trading him.

Why, you ask?

Because one of the teams he wants to play for traded and got an extra first round pick from the Raiders last season. That pick would be higher than the one they earned themselves. Thus, they could trade away their top pick but still stay in the first at a higher position.

Except that the pick they got from the Raiders was for 2011.

But there are rules in place that prevent drops in subsequent years... They'd be on the hook for that first year amount plus at least 30% (I think)...

Don't make me do some more research dammit... any more, and I am going to have to go into business... Just trust me...

Pep won't hit the market anyways... We'll make him play under the tag again, let him do whatever should players be locked out, and then go from there (when he's 32)... Pep and Carey both know that reality is staring them in the face...

As with last year, we own all the leverage, regardless of what the non-agent agent, Carey, wants you to think...

The only problem I have is if we tag him and they do get a CBA passed we will be limited on what we can do. We have to tag Peppers before the 25th IIRC. The new Year for the league is 2nd Mar. In those 5-6 days there could be a new CBA. Not likely but there could be. We will have to wait and see. If it is a uncapped year I have no problem tagging Peppers. But if it isnt then we need a 5 year contract and not making him the highest paid player in the league.

Carey just wants Carolina's offer so he can shop it around to other teams saying. Hey look, Carolina will pay us this. If the FO doesn't do anything, then tags him. Not only does Carey have to shop around in an uncertain economic climate, he has to get a draft pick package that the Panthers will accept. It's pretty smart when you think about it that way. I mean last year they offered a highest paid contract and they said no thank you. If his agent thought it was hard last year to make a deal, It's probably going to be harder this year.

If that unlikely event happens then you can simply untag him.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
