Jordan agrees to buy Bobcats

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Michael Jordan has struck a deal to buy controlling interest of the Charlotte Bobcats, taking charge of the money-losing team in his home state.

Traci Blunt, a spokeswoman for owner Bob Johnson, told The Associated Press that Jordan was able to put together an ownership group late Friday to buy the team he has been a part-owner of since 2006. Jordan has been running the team's basketball operations.

The purchase price was not immediately available.

Former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos also bid on the Bobcats. The NBA's owners still must approve the purchase.

The deal will end Johnson's largely unsuccessful stint as the first black majority owner of a major professional sports team.

The best Basketball player to ever play the game now owns our team..

:o very overwhelming

Yeah man its a beautiful thing for us Bobcats fans. The fact that this comes after a win is even sweeter. I just hope people dont treat Mike like they did Bob and hold a grudge about Postolos not getting the team or a million articles in the Observer questioning him as an owner for the next 6 years.

So KT, you're gonna let that last sentence of the AP article slide?

It was unsuccessful because he lost money.Anyone who thinks Johnson was the worst owner in sports,or the NBA for that matter,is an idiot. The Bobcats are pushing the luxury tax,so he spent plenty of money to put a competitive team on the court. And that's all I ask from an owner.

He could have been cheap and not spent any money like many other owners do when they're losing millions. And for that I give props to Johnson.

Could he have showed up at more game?Yes.

Could he have done a better job at marketing the team?Yes.

But he was far from being the horrible owner that many people made him out to be.With all that being said,he was a very average owner. But he could have been a lot worse. And I hope MJ does a better job, especially at marketing the team.

I am proud that we still have the league's only black owner. Very progressive and I hope it's a trend that starts catching on. I think Jordan is a better basketball man than his career track record indicates and it's awesome that we still get to keep Brown too.

What is good for us is that Jordan wants to win at any cost, and I think that's where he's different than Bob Johnson. Bob was a fantastic business man and he couldn't justify spending hand over fist for a team nobody was watching, but I think Jordan with his reckless spending habits will do whatever it takes to send out a great team. This could make us an even bigger player in the free agent market for years to come.

Bring on the Jordan era!

    • Doubling tripling and quadrupling down on this subject in defense of the pick is reminiscent of a certain mindset that has overtaken the political world. This conversation will become less contentious and dragged out to the point of becoming a dead beaten horse if rational minds can simply agree that we made a mistake missed on a potential franchise center and we will learn from it. All this coping is unnecessary.
    • Here in lies the rub that the supporting posters continue to ignore. He wasn’t a 2nd round pick in the 2025 class, especially with an ACL tear. It was a dumb pick for any GM who looks ahead to determine values. C and CB were much better values than an injured RB in 2024. If a RB isn’t even playing much in 2024, you have to compare him to 2025. We’re beating a dead horse but only because the defense of the pick is almost comical at this point. We’ve made a ton of poo picks and moves/non trades while Morgan was GM and the assistant GM. It happens, we don’t have to jump through hoops to act like we just had some really bad luck. The 2025 draft class is unknown so far but damn it felt way better afterwards for the first time in a long time. Embrace the potential and stop stamping guaranteed on the box of poo of the 2018-2024 drafts. We are were we aware because of them and 2025 has to hit so we can get past the 7 win max in 7 year hurdle. Also, “flashed his talent” isn’t 9 carries for 22 yards. His one reception for 18 yards isn’t a flash with 11 other touches for 27 yards. He hasn’t proven anything. We have no idea if he’ll contribute in 2026.
    • Oh for those tired of the Mannings I have bad news, Peytons son Marshal already has college teams after him and he isn't even in HS until this fall...   I'd wager we have two Mannings in the NFL in 2030
