These are kinda hard to do because so much depends on what players are on the board when you pick but I'll give it a go anyway...

First off...

Trade down in the second. Cardinals might be a good team to trade with since they have extra 3rd and 4th from trading Boldin. Also, Vikings might look to move up if McCoy or The Golden Calf of Bristol is sitting there at 47. I'll use Cards as my example here...

Panthers give up 2nd rounder (#47) + 6th rounder (from Oakland)

Cardinals give up 2nd rounder (#58) + 3rd rounder (#90)

Going by the Draft Trade Value Chart this trade is nearly equal value for both sides. Any team on down to the bottom of the 2nd would work too.

2nd round -- Mardy Gilyard, WR Cincinnati >>> Panthers need help bad at WR and Gilyard is a playmaker. Nearly 2500 yards receiving over the last 2 seasons, posted a solid 4.47 40 time at his pro day and can help on punt returns also.

3rd round A -- Lamarr Houston, DT Texas >>> With Irvin doing nothing last season, we only have 3 DTs that have proven themselves worthy of a roster spot. Still, I don't look at DT as a huge need but Houston is a steal here so I'll take him on value alone. Wouldn't be surprised to see him push for a starting spot by his 2nd season.

3rd round B -- Greg Hardy, DE Ole Miss >>> The bad: Falling down draft boards due to lingering injury concerns and a poor combine. The good: Great motor, wide repertoire of moves and the Panthers have done well developing lineman. Risky but it seems fitting to spend the 90th overall pick on a DE and I feel he could be an impact player at the next level.

Another trade... If the next 2 players are on the board around our 4th round pick I'd trade a 2011 3rd for a current 4th. Usually I am not a fan of trading future picks as you tend to lose too much value but a few things here: the players here are great values and worth the move, we have too many needs and not enough picks and we should get a 3rd round compensatory from Peppers so we'll still have a pick in every round in 2011.

4th round A -- A.J. Edds, SAM Iowa >>> One of the few and probably the best pure SS backer in the draft. Adds some much needed depth, possible starter in the future and should help immediately on STs.

4th round B -- Riley Cooper, WR Florida >>> Another WR? With Smitty turning 31 this season and no other proven WRs on the team, absolutely. Solid showing at the combine, really came on as a senior posting nearly 1,000 yards even in Florida's run-happy offense.

5th (compensatory) -- Eric Olsen, C Notre Dame >>> Adds some much needed depth behind Kalil. Versatile, able to play anywhere on the interior, so adds extra depth at OG as well. Not dominant but very consistent only giving up 1 sack all season as a senior. Good size at 6-4, 306.

6th (compensatory) -- Sean Canfield, QB Oregon State >>> Really raw but has alot of upside. I look at him as a poor mans Joe Flacco. We'd still need a veteran as a backup QB but he's a good #3 to bring in and develop.

7th round -- Zoltan Mesko, P Michigan >>> Great 43 yard punting average, very good at placing the ball in spots and importantly does excellent on kickoffs also. He's a guy that should be able to come in and contribute right away. Plus his freaking name is Zoltan.

So to sum up...

Step 1: Tear up the draft as listed above.

Step 2: ?????

Step 3: Profit.

Not bad at all, really... If I had to nitpick, I'd replace Cooper with someone like Andre Roberts or Briscoe if he's still on the board, and I'm starting to think we'll look at QB earlier on...

Have some rep though, for hitting most of our needs...

Cooper is an ideal #2 for this O.

Bring in Zoltan.

Besides being a great punter, 89% of his kickoffs go into the end zone. Not to mention he weighs 220 and is built like a linebacker. He will literally run down and knock someone out on kickoffs.

And c'mon, that'd be two straight years we'd get the guy in the draft with the coolest name.

Plus, I pretty much loathe Baker at this point. When he's not busy taking his sweet time and getting his punts blocked he's usually kicking these low line drives that result in huge returns. Plus his kickoffs blow, granted he's better than Kasay but so are half of the people on this board.

BRING IN THE ZOLTAN!!!!!!

so is briscoe and DJ. the question with roberts is "slot or #1". he isnt as big as you want for a #1, but that didnt stop smitty did it, and with the drafting of gilyard you have a similar player to roberts already, so it would be a backup pick if gilyard didnt work out.

any of the 3 (roberts, cooper, or briscoe) are really good options for us concidering we only have smitty and hope for a DJ coming out party. we need a lot of WR help and hope 1 or more work out.

i would say for us, i would rank them briscoe, cooper, roberts IF we drafted gilyard. i just think briscoe can be a dominant #1 like brandon marshall when he wants to be, when he doesnt he is a bigger keary colbert. he is a home run or bust, but we need that HR. i would be willing to gamble on him if we get a solid guy earlier.

Seriously though, here is Bakers contract...

7/18/2007: Signed a five-year, $8.5 million contract extension through 2012. The deal contains $2.2 million guaranteed, including a $250,000 "signing" bonus in the third year. 2010: $1,137,500, 2011: $1.4 million, 2012: $1.55 million, 2013: Free Agent

I think the 7th rounders make around 300K so you'd end up saving over a million in 2011 and 2012 making this switch.

      The "now it's been three years" Grade for the 2023 Draft

      Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
