ESPN's McShay: QB a reach in 2nd round; McCoy overrated ; who could be available

The Carolina Panthers would be reaching to draft a quarterback with their first pick in the upcoming NFL draft, which falls in the middle of the second round, according to ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay.

Speaking today on a national conference call with reporters, McShay said after the top two quarterback prospects, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Notre Dame's JImmy Clausen, who are both projected first-round picks, he doesn't have another player at the position with a second-round grade.

If the Panthers were to pick a quarterback in the second round, McShay said it likely would be Texas' Colt McCoy or Florida's The Golden Calf of Bristol, but that he ranks both of them no higher than the third round.

Of McCoy, McShay said: "As much as I love his competitiveness, I think he's overrated and I think (adjusting to playing in the NFL) is going to be a big shock to his system."

There are divided opinions about The Golden Calf of Bristol. Some think he can excel as an NFL quarterback, but McShay is in the group who view The Golden Calf of Bristol as a developmental prospect who could take two or three years to be ready to play.

"In the first two rounds you have to draft players who can start and hopefully right away, or at least by the second year," said McShay. "The team that drafts The Golden Calf of Bristol and expects him to play in the first two years, that's just not fair. He's not ready.

"When you talk about taking him in the first and second round, I'd pass. But in the third and fourth round, that's where he's worth it as a developmental prospect."

Two other positions the Panthers are expected to eye in the draft are defensive end and wide receiver. McShay said players with high value who could be available at those positions when Carolina's mid-second round selection arrives are Clemson defensive end/outside linebacker Ricky Sapp and Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate.

I am not ruling it out... We are talking about Fox and Hurney here, it is not easy predicting what they will do.

Well, considering this is their last season if they don't make the playoffs I'd say it's a safe bet they don't take a quarterback. They'll take someone that can make an immediate impact.

Every year Kiper, Mcshay, and Mayock come out and say, "The Panthers will/need to draft a QB in the first two rounds.". Every year we don't do it. We don't need one and Fox and Hurney just don't draft QB's high.

Yeah well this isn't exactly the same team that we have seen the last few seasons either. We have nobody behind Matt Moore and while a rookie may not be ideal, it is possible. Again, I am not ruling any position out because I feel that they are going to surprise a few fans this draft

      They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.

      I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).

      It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
