The geese are back

Sitting working at my desk this afternoon I heard them come in. These aren't the typical year round Canadian geese that have come to plague a lot of parks, golf course, etc. This pair shows up every spring to use our pond to raise their babies and as soon as they can fly they're off again. They nest in a blackberry patch at the edge of the field across the driveway.

Where we lived up until a year ago used to have geese come in all the time, but there would always be a couple that would come and make it their home and have their young there. Used to follow my dad around the pond about 20 years ago hoping he'd throw them pieces of dog treats that he kept in his pocket.

I think we had a couple generations from that original couple that came over back then. They'd always make their nest on this little island on the pond and take turns sitting in the eggs.

When they'd hatch they would wait a week and then I guess walk them off to another pond close by and then come home for a couple weeks before they flew off.

Later in the season we'd get a couple dozen that would come and hang for a while. I hated them. Left that green poop sludge everywhere that my dog lived to roll around in and eat.

The last year we were there we had another type of geese that came in as well. I think they were called cackling geese. They are smaller and have a weird honk that's more like a squeak than a honk. For a few weeks we would have between 40-60 geese out there. Such a nuisance. Since they were also pooping in the pond they'd bring seeds in of some kind of weed that would cover most of the pond.

I loved that little goose family that came, but when we had dozens come in it turned into a big pain. Makes me glad we moved into town.

Just under 12. I'm trying to buy up some of the surrounding land too. There's miles of uninhabited woods surrounding me on three sides.

That’s awesome.  I nearly purchased 200 acres for $200k in North Carolina mountains few years ago but someone beat me to it.

They were running late this year. They just came in just now. I was having a beer on the deck and they splashed down.

Maybe had trouble crossing back to US from Canada this year around.  Glad their papers checked out.

But seriously, this is awesome.

    • We were bad for years before Bryce Young and it wasn’t like this. I didn’t like the Rhule hire, but I didn’t drag the board down every chance I got. I didn’t like letting Cam go and bringing in Teddy, but I didn’t make it my mission in life to make sure everybody who disagreed with me was berated into submission.
    • it's pretty simple IMO.  The Tepper Panthers are the most unsuccessful professional sports team in all of sports.  The problem isn't the posters here have changed ( I still content people falsely romanticize the old days).  The product dictates the atmosphere more than anything.  In reality, the daily convos about THE worst team in all of pro sports on a fanatics site....is going to feature harsh and critical convo.  Only one entity can actually change that.  It's the Carolina Panthers football team.  if you are the most unsuccessful professional sports teams (Tepper's Panthers are that).....and a place like this isn't filled with very critical thoughts? Well, you probably don't actually have a real fanbase IMO.
    • Yes message boards will always include that sort of stuff… However, this place has been a cess pool since the team took Bryce Young over CJ Stroud. It becomes a problem when it is accepted and promoted, which it has been here (even by at least one mod). Many posters sole purpose on this board is to try to dunk on others for having different opinions. We just had one write a novella on how talking about Bryce Young’s game winning drives “needs to stop”…after a win. They don’t want real conversation. It “needs to stop”. There are many posters here who literally only show up after losses to dead thread and try to dunk on others about the QB (MRenshaw is an easy example). I really don’t see much of that happening the other way around. There’s too many people that would rather the team be bad so they can feel justified for constant doom and gloom and negative opinions. It’s been pointed out by many over the past couple years. This just isn’t a place to have football discussions anymore because of the constant hyperbole. If you don’t subscribe to “Bryce Young is the worst QB ever who can’t throw the ball further than 5 yards and is the reason why we lose any game we lose and doesn’t help in any game we win”, then you are labeled a Bryce Young Stan.
