Comedy IQ

I made an observation recently watching standup on Comedy Central, and I wanted to see if you all agree or disagree.

It seems to me, that people make fun of people just slightly dumber than them. Right? To find comedy in some group of people, you have to be as smart as they are to understand them, and then be at least slightly smarter to find absurdity in their actions. People don't often mock those smarter than them, because they don't really understand them enough to find the comedy. Converely they don't often mock people a lot dumber because it just seems mean. Accepted?

So by extension, you can use someone's sense of humor; who they mock, as a rudimentary guage of intelligence.

To whit:

  • Dennis Miller, Lewis Black and Jon Stewart make fun of politicians, business owners, lawyers, and other intellectuals. A pretty smart group of people, making them arguably in the top percentile as far as intellect goes.

  • Ron White, Wanda Sykes, and Dennis Leary make fun of politicians, but they don't seem to hit the other intellectuals; probably putting them on par or slightly below that rung.

  • Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Bill Cosby, and Dane Cook mock the middle class and every day people and situations, making them slightly smarter than the average person.

  • Jeff Foxworthy mocks rednecks and hillbillies, but tends not to hit the middle class, putting him just below that mark.

  • Ralphie May and Larry the Cable Guy make fun of dumb people, and not much else, so their IQs are probably slightly lower than average.

  • And Carlos Mencia makes fun of retards...... so yeah.

    • Will be interesting to see how the Caps adjust. They were thoroughly beaten in this game despite it going to OT and they knew it by getting chippy. If they lose game 2 they’re in a hole they might not be able to dig themselves out of. They played old and tired tonight and I think they might get swept.
    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
