CO:Success isn't a given for receivers

Yes Wr is a difficult position to evaluate, however you cannot run from drafting the position. If you keep plugging Vets in you will never allow yourself the opportunity to draft a good young WR. We got lucky with Smith, failed with some others... It's a necessary risk that has to be taken.

Good point, but a 2nd round pick is a valuable pick (especially this year) and I don't think we should spend it on a position with such a high rate of failure.

Yeah, it sucks how hard it is to evaluate receivers but that doesn't mean we have to count it out. Look at all the bust DT's/DE's in the 2nd round, the same can be said for any receiver.

No risk no reward.

There are busts at every position including DE and DT, but the rate of failure doesn't compare to WR.

As the article said, this year is really deep in WR talent in rounds 2 and 3. You can't just translate past success rates over to this draft.

True, but again - under the best of circumstances it's a crapshoot and we need help at that position now, not in 2 or 3 years.

Best circumstance is 50%? It depends on who you pick and how talented they are. That's like saying you can draft a 20 year old Jerry Rice and turn around and say "oh well he's a WR so he'll be a bust half the time".

Where'd you even get 50% from anyway?

Re-read the article and edited my post after saying 50%, I mis-remembered the context of the 41% stat they quoted when discussing the # WR's taken in the first 48 picks that started as rookies.

Bottom line, I think our 2nd round pick this year is too valuable to spend on a WR.

The answer to the problem is obvious: draft a TON of WR's.

I understand the though process here, draft many hoping to find one, but we're short on draft picks this year.

My answer to the problem would be to use our 3rd or 4th on a WR and sign a proven FA to hedge our bet on the rookie.

    • Do you see the vision?  As of now our Carolina Panthers don’t have an identity. We are not an offensive powerhouse and on defense we only started getting it together towards the end of the year last year. In my opinion we are much closer to having an incredible defense that scares the daylights out of people. I say the answer is simple and we fully commit to that possible identity.    Emmanuel McNeil Warren (E man)  This guy is like a shark lurking around ready to attack anyone. Fearless. He is easily a top 20 talent in my eyes, and the only reason he isn’t more talked about is because he’s from Toledo. Do your due diligence as panther fans and watch his tape I beg you. Once you’re done watching let me ask you this, if you dropped E - Man into the strong safety spot on the Buckeyes, he isn’t being talked about as one of the best prospects we’ve seen in some time given the skill set you see with this guy? I think so. Put his name on the card and turn it in at 19.    Jacob Rodriguez  High effort, High energy, High IQ guy that flies around the field. We all know Jacob at this point. My only concern is he’s a little bit too good and I’m not sure he makes it to us at our pick in the second. With the additions of Jacob and E- Man I think our defense goes to top 5 in the league. We would have a duo of linebackers that rival anything we’ve had in our past. I’m not a GM so I don’t know what the possible answer could be, but if there’s a way we can comfortably trade up in the second to secure this guy I think we find a way to do it.    Spend the rest of our picks fixing the O - line.    Thoughts Panthers fans? Who’s the ideal duo for yall?
    • OL is arguably much more important to the success of a young QB. (Or any QB)
    • Didn’t get around to watching this one but looks like Pistons played their starters and actually tried…? Unlucky that they sit vs Magic, etc and try vs us. Hopefully we can beat the Heat and then Magic or 6ers with no Embiid. BUT if not, the NBA really should give us the lottery win this year like they did Mavs last year. Another high pick could be our final missing piece and have us as legit top contenders next year and going forward if we’re healthy. Or trade it for a Giannis type
