Worth considering (Re: The Draft)

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So the first three picks are now out of the way (though not quite in the manner expected).

The question now becomes how long before a defensive lineman is taken.

Is it plausible that we get through the entire draft and don't ever take one?

(I'm gonna say negative on question two, but then you never know)

Part of me wonders if they won't get a FB at some point.

Yeah I know they got Fiammetta, but they also released Hoover and Fiammetta didn't stay healthy all season.

He wound up out for a bit with a concussion, and that in only limited activity.

Not a good sign given what his position demands of him.

Maybe with a late round draft choice, like 6th or 7th. Well, maybe 5th. Just guessing, I don't really know about any FB's in the draft nor where they usually get drafted.

I would wager that they would pursue any in FA, though, and don't address it in the draft (considering QB just took a pick, which I didn't really see coming).

Since Sutton did such a good job (I know, I know; he wouldn't be able to sustain as a FB and I wouldn't expect him to) they might put Edwards in there as FB as well.

EDIT: I would like to add I have little to no knowledge about scouting, the draft, or probably football in general.

I stated before today's picks and I'll state it again... It falls into line with your scattershot proposal Mr.Scot ---

I would love to see us use the 4th round pick on Jacoby Ford. Possibly Gilyard or Briscoe. Just get another WR.

Our problem in the past has been that it looked like we took whatever WR was there just to quell the fans cries for help at the position. So, we'd pick up one guy and everyone would put all their hopes into that guy being a difference maker immediately that it turned into such a big disappointment.

This year, go all out. We got Lafell and Edwards... Edwards is gonna be a spot-duty guy this year, which I don't have a problem with, I think he's going to be very successful for us, starting this year. Now go get another WR and we have 1/3 odds that one of those guys will be HUGE for us this year and help get defenders off Smitty and open up the run game even more. Plus, all 3 will pretty much be guaranteed to make the team.

If we don't go that route, I wouldn't mind bringing in another pass catching TE. Defensive end is a need, but I don't see any big impact guys available there that would be in our reach. As far as LB, as I said, I don't know where he's projected, but I would like to see Dakoda Watson.

IMO, Hurney/Fox truly feel confident in what we have on the DL, especially DT, as the picks so far suggest. I feel confident in what we have now as well, although it wouldn't hurt to add to it, I think offense was the main concern and that's what we should address.

so we assume Brandon Lafell and Armanti Edwards beat out those two. That would mean the depth chart looks like

WR1 Steve Smith, Armanti Edwards

WR2 Dwayne Jarrett, Brandon Lafell

With a project like Armanti Edwards, it's also possible he gets put on the Practice Squad.

So the question is, do we draft another WR, or does Kenny Moore stay? I'm pretty sure we can't stash him or Charly Martin on the practice squad anymore since they played in games.

With Jarrett a huge question mark and the low confidence in K.Moore, there is room for another receiver. However, that'll spell the end for K.Moore. It'll be great if they did draft another WR. I think they'll probably look at OL, LB, or DB though.

No way Edwards gets put on the PS... lol Hurney has been gushing over him, they have a good idea of what he's gonna bring to the table.

And I wouldn't put it past Lafell to beat out DJ for the #2. I see DJ as a better slot guy this year anyway. So yes, even with all of them still here, I still say go after Jacoby Ford for a pure speed guy who has already been groomed as a WR. I could live with Gilyard as well.

We can make room for 5 WRs plus a Special Teamer that is penciled in as a WR (Wallace Wright). Kinda like Karl Hankton.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
