Now that I think about it...

…The draft didn't go as well as I originally though and I'm kinda pissed.

  1. It's like nobody has faith in Moore yet. Does he really need 2.5 rookies to back him up??

  2. We still only drafted one D linesman.

  3. I don't understand why we picked up Wallace Wright along with all these WR draft picks. Now we have 7 wide outs, even though we're a team that rarely uses our #3 guy.

  4. Armanti Edwards could've been snatched further down.

  5. Do we really need three more defensive backs??

I thought the draft went well considering who the picks actually are, but all together… Some picks just seem like wastes.

Don't get me wrong, they were all great picks, but we barely addressed our D line, which was our biggest concern entering the draft.

Moore will not last long simply because he is not the answer and our FO was smart enough to see that, he comes on strong at end of seasons but he has done nothing to show he can keep it up through the entire season.

But the 3 rookie QBs and Hunter Cantwell have showed themselves as answers?? If anything, we should've picked up a veteran backup. 3 more unproven guys leaves us with 4 unproved QBs and then Matt Moore, who's semi-proven.

You're all tearing me up about this, but of all teams in the NFL, we don't need to draft 3 wide outs. Yeah, they can help on special teams, and yes, we can cut Jarrett and Kenny Moore. But our D Line has no depth what so ever. We could use free agency I guess, but I don't see us being very active at all, as usual.

WR drafting method is possibly related to the scattershot method (aka draft a bunch of WR's hoping one pans out). Not to mention one of the 7 wide outs on the roster is purely for ST.

They have spent a lot on the D-Line already, and it's obvious there were more pressing issues (WR's).

I don't think you understand all the moves before the draft, to be honest.

I will answer your questions.

1. I think the coaching staff is caustiously optimistic about Moore. He had some nice games in mop up duty last season. But, his is still VERY unproven and looked like dog poo in the 2008 preseason. Adding a Top 10 talent to compete with him was an absolute no brainer. Pike fell into our laps in the 6th round. No other player that woudl could have taken there had as much upside. Nothing to lose with the pick.

2. We actually drafted 3 DL in this draft. Do not forget that we traded picks for Leonard and Tyler. They are better than any DT we could have taken in the 4th-7th rounds.

3. Wallace Wright was a ST stud...no so much a WR. He is potentially like what we had in Karl Hankton. You take flyers on WR and DB late in the draft. Pick based on athleticism and you may hit every once and again.

4. I am not so sure that Edwards would have lasted much longer. I heard rumors that several teams were looking to take him right around the time that we did. Our FO saw something they liked in him and went and got him. Sometimes you take a chance for a high reward. His athletecism is great. He also adds a Wildat option to our offense now.

5. See my comment on WR above. You take athletes late in the draft. Also, we are in a pass happy league now....especially with Atlanta and NO in our division. You had better be able to line up 5 DB's and cover good WR's. The days of living with 3 solid DB's is long gone.

Hope this helps bring you up to speed on the Panthers and football. :D

Still a C+. The knocks: BS on taking BPA and not reaching--Edwards. He wasn't the BPA and reached, period. They had a Viagra woodie for this guy and once again mortgaged a pick (thank goodness not a first). Not getting another NT. How good is Leonard? I don't know and isn't he coming off an injury? I know Meeks doesn't put a lot of stock in a beefy DL and exactly why Indy's rush D was consistantly mediocre. Pike, why? Oh yeah, the BPA deal. Lastly, I guess only WRs and DBs need to keep their phones on during the last two rounds, because only STs flyers are worth thier salt. Sorry big guys, just hope you get a call once the draft concludes.

The only issue I had with the draft was not trading up for tate once we picked Jimmy.

Wouldnt that have made a lot sense??!!

Would have cost way too much.

And, I heard that a lot of teams were not that high on Tate. He is a scrappy runner after the catch, but there were still a lot of negatives.

I personally liked him....but he was not worth giving up multiple picks. I prefer LaFell and the picks to just Tate.

I don't get drafting Tony Pike. And I don't understand giving away a 2nd for a guy with no position. I like drafting Clasuen though.

If Pike shows anything good then a 6th round comp. pick turns into a 1st or 2nd or 3rd round pick from another team. Think what Matt Cassel turned into for the Pat's. Tried too think out of the box.

1. It's like nobody has faith in Moore yet. Does he really need 2.5 rookies to back him up??

They knew they needed a rookie to develop. Clausen was too good of value to pass up. Pike was the guy they spent a lot of time targeting. I think they rated him as a 4-5th round pick at lowest, so when he was there in the 6th they felt he was the best value. If all of these guys work out (fat chance) we will be able to leverage 1 of them for some serious draft picks.

2. We still only drafted one D linesman.

We have a boatload of DTs. We are in pretty good shape there. People just aren't aware of what the guys can do. There is experience & talent there for run stuffing. Check out the 'unofficial' depth chart I posted.

3. I don't understand why we picked up Wallace Wright along with all these WR draft picks. Now we have 7 wide outs, even though we're a team that rarely uses our #3 guy.

We hadn't drafted anyone when we signed Wright. Now we have 9, I thiink. Edwards needs time to develop & will fill immediately on STs. We will be cutting whoever does not work out in training camp (smart IMO).

4. Armanti Edwards could've been snatched further down.

Agreed. Dumb to give up a 2nd rounder next year for him. We could have gotten him or a compareable player at our next pick or later.

5. Do we really need three more defensive backs??

Yes. As someone pointed out. Marshall is upset & may sit out or be traded. I hope that doesn't happen, but these were good picks...1 (Pugh) will be a safety not CB.

6. I thought the draft went well considering who the picks actually are, but all together… Some picks just seem like wastes.

Only giving up a 2nd rounder next year, IMO.

7. Don't get me wrong, they were all great picks, but we barely addressed our D line, which was our biggest concern entering the draft.

    • We had a QB who could do that and its the last time we went to the Super Bowl and the only time we had an MVP. Once he lost his ability to do that he was out of the league. To filter out insignificant stats I will only look at QBs who have played in 10 or more games this year. There are 28 qualifying QBs. Bryce is 25th in Air Yards per Attempt at 6.4. Only Joe Flacco, Cam Ward, and Dillon Gabriel are worse (6.0, 5.8, 5.1). Trevor Lawrence, Patrick Mahomes, and CJ Stroud are the median QBs at 7.1. Drake Maye and Sam Darnold lead the league at 8.7. Bryce is 18th in the league for passes that travel 30+ yards at 12. The median is Caleb Williams at 15. The league leader is Matthew Stafford with 26. With passes that travel 40+ yards, Bryce is tied with three others at 21st in the league with 3. Only Jacoby Brissett, Cam Ward, Joe Flacco, and Dillon Gabriel are worse. The median is a three-way tie with Drake Maye, Trevor Lawrence, and Baker Mayfield with 6. The league leader is Sam Darnold with 12. Having the ability to complete passes down the field (not YAC) stretches the defense and makes them account for more ground. It keeps players out of the box and keeps formations in nickel or dime, less line backers for your RBs to worry about. Bryce is why we have 2 losses against the Saints. If he had the outright ability to sling the football down field we beat the easily, but he doesn't. So they crowded the box and our 2 starting caliber RBs with our top ~10 Oline couldn't carry the offense to a win on their own. The limitations of the offense fall squarely on Bryce.
    • Bryce’s deep passes are intermediate passes for other strong armed QBs. I will say that Bryce’s accuracy on his deep passes have improved. Before they would just sail out of bounds. Now the WR actually has a fighting chance on the ball.
