One huge problem w/ the QB situation

There is no one on this roster to teach Clausen how to be an NFL QB. How to put the work in, how to be a leader, and how to earn the respect of the lockerroom. Matt Moore still needed that veteran type player on this team to help him grow if he was going to be that guy.....Clausen is way behind the 8 ball in regards to those things.....

the roster of QBs we have put together almost ensures Carolina won't be bring in that type player this season.

We do have a pretty darn good QB coach. Look at what he has done with Moore.

Bingo that is the reason you have QB coaches. Also if Clausen plays this year he is going to have a small playbook. They wont give him to much free way on what he can do.

We shoulda brought in Bulger as a backup instead of Pike.

I liked Pike and wanted us to get him but that was before I knew we'd get Clausen. There was no reason for us to get both.

What the hell is Bulger gonna do for us? That guy has been beat to death in St. Louis, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's out of football by this time next year.

For what it's worth, the pundits on the NFL Live just this week were talking about what a great QB coach Rip Scherer is! But, I wish a way could have been found to keep Jake as a backup, for this very reason. Nothing like a long time starter who had his share of success to teach and mentor the younger guys. Heck, we're paying Jake 12 to 13 million as it is this year, we should have kept him on the roster in hopes of getting something back for that. Him and Moore have been teammates for 3 years, and with a high profile rookie coming in, Jake, being the good guy and team player he's always been, would no doubt have been a good influence on them. Of course, we'll never know now!

I would agree with you, but some on here would not because they would point out that is what coaches do. I've been down this road before and believe me, they will gladly point that out to you.

The mentor argument holds water when you have a great vet QB leading from the front and then he goes and the young guy takes over. But I don't really see how having some washed up 40 year old with a clipboard is gonna show Moore and Clausen how to lead 50+ men. Now how to put the work in is something else, Vinny T did that for D Will, which just shows it needs to be a vet doesn't have to be a vet at the same position.

To a lesser degree than most would though. Davidson is a disciple of the Weis system, so there's a good chance Claussen already knows a lot of the terminology and philosophy associated with our offense.

It's been said you have to be a borderline PhD to be able to handle the Weis playbook. Claussen handled it well in college, so he's better prepared than a lot of guys would be.

The tougher job will be someone making sure he knows how to act like an adult.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
