One huge problem w/ the QB situation

Clausen is imature....that I believe.

As for the opinion of 32 teams in the NFL, Brees was a 2nd rd pick, Brady was a 6th round pick, Romo was an UDFA, Warner was an UDFA.

That is the problem with QB's. It is too difficult to guage which will be good and which will be busts. I understand teams not wanting to lock up tons of money on a Top 10 pick at QB. However, we got Clausen with a low 2nd round pick.....this was a no brainer pick.

Sure, we know....there is plenty of info avaliable...he took a big step his junior year but the kid has always struggled in those aspects. As Jimmy said, his college teammates liked to "hang out" with him....I don't doubt that. You got have blinders on not to realize since high school this kid's head has been pumped w/ a lot of bad stuff......he made progress at ND.....but he is still behind a lot of guys coming out of schoolin certain aspects. That was the main reason he dropped to the freaking 48th pick and would have likely been much further if not for Carolina......THAT has nothing to do w/ Mel Kiper's opinion. It has to do w/ the opinion of all 32 teams in the NFL. The proof is right there....and that is why he fell in the draft....in pure skilll he was probably the #1 QB in the draft. So you are suggesting the entire NFL during the draft was just listening to Mel Kiper's bs?

I don't get it. You underline something and it's supposed to be proof?

For whatever reason, Clausen fell to us in the draft. You want to say it's character, then go find some proof that he's a bad character. If you want to say mechanics, then go find some proof that his mechanics suck. If you want to talk Notre Dame QBs, then go link to Rick Mirer and Brady Quinn.

I think he got caught in a perfect storm of team needs, runs on the line, and a shocker of a pick in Denver. And we were the beneficiaries of it. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

BTW, I underlined that so you would know it's proof of my point. :)

was Brees (and the rest) regarded as possibly the most talented and NFL ready QB entering the draft though?

Why did Clausen fall? that is what is being discussed.

I do think a lot of teams were questioning his maturity....and for good reason.

I just believe getting him late in the 2nd round is a steal. We get a POTENTIAL franchise QB without having to mortgage the future to sign him....huge diff in Top 10 and #48 money.

I would not have like trading away a lot to get up in the 1st round to take him. However, I an delighted that we got him at #48.

Will he be a star....who knows. But, we don't have to pay $45 million in guaranteed money to find out.

you are acting like it some great mystery why the kid fell in the draft. it isn't. trying to downplay those things as not existing, doesn't make much sense. at least not to me.

it isn't realistic to only hype and talk about the positives of players. No one is bashing his mechanics or skills.....he was the best overall QB in this draft overall in those departments. It is the stuff that makes or breaks talented QBs that are his red flag issues......I don't question anything about what he physically brings to the table....I love it all.

I agree w/ everything you just said. I could easily see a scenario where could be of the biggest steals probably in a decade.

a QB coach's job is too to show him how to play QB. Not how to be an NFL QB. I think too many people are blowing off how important it is to have that role model......especially for a player who has proven to be clueless in many of the aspects of that position and role as Clausen. Clausen is a kid. A clueless one at that. You guys are giving the QB coach too much credit and responsiblity.

do what!?

lol

I guess we'll agree to disagree... we have a good NFL QB coach.. we have leaders on the team to be role models.. Smitty will help him along as well..

everything else is just too over-dramatic for my liking.. he isn't going to fail because he doesn't have a vet QB to show him the same thing the QB coach is paid to do.

my bad, i guess I missed where Rip was an NFL QB. But I guess he can tell Clausen how to do all the things to gain over an NFL lockerroom and be that guy....despite never having done it.

lol, Smitty? Smitty isn't even a good mentor for young WRs to date. But I guess, he will teach Clausen what an NFL QB is about....

lol.. dude.. Rip Sherer is getting paid to teach NFL QBs how to play QB in the NFL at the QB position..

this is a job the QB coach does. A Vet leader does not. A vet leader helps the kid along, but the vet QB is still coached by the QB coach...

last year, Delhomme was learning new mechanics from the QB coach.. therefore, the QB coach was teaching a vet leader how to play QB in the NFL.. your point- lost.

There is a pecking order here that I'm trying to convey to you..

QB Coach

Vet Leader

Up and coming QB

I don't understand what your missing here.. you're telling me the QB coach is paid to not teach QBs how to play at the NFL level? seriously? lol

I get your point, but it's not that big of a deal.. Aaron Rodgers couldn't get any help from Brett Favre and he is doing fairly well.. Pointing out bad QBs who didn't have a vet leader doesn't help your point any.

Edit: and Smitty will help keep the kid in check.. he doesn't have to teach Clausen how to play QB in the NFL since we have a NFL paid QB coach to teach the kid how to play QB in the NFL.. lol

yes, he is getting paid to teach him what to do on the field. He can't teach him everything about being an NFL QB.....it is more than just learning the offense, mechanics, and what to do on the field. you are really missing the point.....Jake's role to Moore wasn't too show him mechanics and all that jazz....his role was showing Moore what being an NFL QB is about and that aspect has nothing to so w/ mechanics and being on a football field. That isn't even something Jake would have to intentionally do. It ain't that hard to grasp that concept.

Aaron Rodgers didn't have the concerns coming into the league and needing work on those type aspects.....those type aspect also didn't cause Rogers to have an epic fall in an NFL draft.
