Goodson this season

Recommended Posts

i know everyone is hyped about the panthers drafting a dynamic & dangerous open field guy Armanti Edwards (as am I), but we just drafted the same type of guy last year in Goodson, and he was under-utilized in the offense (he did have fumbling issues, i'll give you that).

But, Goodson is still a great talent with very good hands for a RB. just because he isnt the hot new thing doesnt mean we wont see alot more of him this season than Armanti. In fact, given Fox's track record with rookies, i would say it would be more likely that Goodson lines up in the slot more often than Armanti, unless Armanti shows a tremendous upgrade over goodson.

either way, you have to admit both of these guys have the talent and skills to be on the field in some capacity. but they both are tweeners and will not plug into the current system flawlessly at a true position.

I think we need to utilize this type of player more often to add a little flavor in our vanilla offense. I think by drafting Armanti, we are essentially ready to take that next step and have someone like Goodson or Armanti on the field most of the time to keep defenses on thier toes.

Maybe the logic is, why build a group of plays or sets to exploit the talent of this type of player last year (goodson), when they could get hurt, or have problems holding on to the ball in this case. But now with 2 guys like this, you can justify the time to implement such schemes b/c you have a backup if one of them is tired or injured.

bottom line, i think we will see more of both of these guys this year than we may think, with goodson leading the way. it could be a very interesting twist to the offense.

thoughts?

Edwards probably has better hands than Goodson, given his college position. He's also more of a threat for gadget plays. And given Fox's reputation for playing rookies extensively in every season he's been a head coach here, maybe Edwards has the edge there as well. :)

armanti will be used more than goodson. it's pretty obvious that they have bigger plans for him than goodson. there's a good reason for that.
If he can show consistency at WR i believe you are right. but if they have to create a place for him i am not sure. goodson has had time to fix his fumbling issue, and learn from some other great RB's on the team.

but the FO wouldnt have given up a 2nd next year for Armanti to sit on the bench either. so i see him being involved as well.

Imagine Smitty, LaFell, Armanti and D-wll or Stew on the field at once

The front office gave up next year's second round pick for Armanti, and they actually have moved him to WR. I think the plans for Armanti are bigger than the ones they have/had for Goodson.

As far as Goodson's fumbling issue, you know who else has had time to fix his fumbling? Adrian Peterson. I'd say they were still an issue.

I'm thinking that Goodson will be given preferential treatment to start, but will have a rather short leash. If he doesn't show he's stepped his game up, Edwards will pass him quickly.

agreed

goodson will make the 53 man roster, simply due to the fact that he was a high pick last year. so where do you put him on the field? we have better WR's than him, we have better RB's than him, too small for FB and TE. so he will fill some type of hybrid role i think. they need to find out if he is worth keeping, so he should see some action this season.
