Clausen struggled a little bit when the rain came too. I think Cantwell did pretty well since he was playing with a bottom of the barrel O-line in the pouring rain. He had about 3 passes that hit guys right in the hands, but they couldn't catch it.

Having said that, Cantwell doesn't have the best feet in the world, and that's what will seperate Clausen from him.

Cantwell had to play in the pouring rain with 3rd stringers and 4th stringers. Half of his lineman and receivers will not be here in three weeks. The biggest thing that concerned me is he didn't look confident....Clausen played like he owned the team.

For those saying he can't play, you must have been watching another game. Cantwell threw the best balls of the night. He completed 6 of 17 for 68 yards but Gettis should have stayed in bounds, Edwards dropped at least 2 and the pass to Gettis was clearly pass interference. Cantwell held the ball too long at times but on the hot read got the ball out well. He threw behind 2 receivers but he had no help with the blocking and did pretty well with what he had to work with. I figure he would have had better numbers than Clausen without the rain and poor receiver play.

You realize that the recievers were playing in the rain as well dont you? Your only letting Cantplaywell use that excuse for his missfires. Yeah Armanti dropped one but it was raining for him too. A lot of the poor reciever play was due to the rain and field conditions. It looked like everybody was losing their footing. I just dont get why you think he played so well??? Yeah he had the most zip (even in the rain) on the ball but with the wet conditions thats not a great attribute.

I personally am not posting in this thread to bash Cantwell. He played with the third teamers and did a fair job. My point is that on a relative basis, Clausen was clearly the more poised and collected quarterback. Forgetting about the specific plays for a moment, Clausen looked as poised as any QB out there tonight. Yes he has a lot to work on but you have got to be feeling better about him than you did when TC started... I'm not sure you can say that for the other backups just yet.

FWIT, Cantwell > > > Pike. To be honest, the Cantwell/Pike comparison is closer to what many assume you would see with a 2nd year guy vs a 1st year guy.

I was definitely impressed with Clausen, but Judging Cantwell based on all of those dropped balls, is like judging Clausen on his INT where the WR fell down. All the QB can do is put the ball where it's supposed to be, and both of those guys did that, for the most part.

I'll say it again though, Cantwell looks like he doesn't have good enough feet to ever be a starter. Other than that though, it's way too early to judge one way or the other.

Maybe it was all the balls he put on the money to the receivers who dropped them. Maybe it was the hot read he got out to Gettis on the blitz. Maybe it was because he actually threw the ball downfield which is what we do in a vertical passing game. And maybe because he has the best arm and showed it. When we play teams in the wind or bad conditions it will be very important to have a guy who can throw more than a 5 yard dumpoff.

How would you decide that on a field that was so wet you couldn't get any traction. he did what quarterbacks are supposed to do, hang in there, look downfield and find a receiver. Guys like roethlisburger do the same thing are lauded for it.

Where were all these balls on the money? Your right lets start him. Best Arm- Cantwell, puts everything on the money(even in the rain)- Cantwell.

Which is what I want to see from a QB.

Cantwell clearly has the best arm. It's strong and accurate. Sadly that's all he's got going for him. He looked lost last night - he even pulled a play out of David Carr's playbook and turned his back to the blitz.

I want to see Pike before Cantwell next game.

Why are you arguing with me? I'm agreeing with you. Cantwell hit his WR's right in the hands 2-3 times, but they failed to catch it. My only problem with him, was that he didn't move very well in the pocket. That's where Clausen kind of stands out so far.
