Charles Godfrey

Ya I think the coaches should play since they are responsible for the execution of plays!!

It is the coaches job to put the players in the best position to make plays. Only maybe a handful of times were the defensive secondary in position to do their jobs. That my friend is what coaching is for.

I did not notice this thread...Maybe we should make ONE secondary thread?

After re-watching the game. The blame Godfrey thing maybe true for the first part of the game but from the 3rd quarter at the 03:29 mark until 4th quarter 06:17 mark #20 Gamble was the one playing like crap! Godfrey was having to come over to take care of tackling at that point of the game.

I broke it down so you can review the tape if you think I'm crazy. BTW I'm not big on Godfrey, but let's make sure we don't say someone was playing like crap the entire game when they did not. All of the secondary sucked A$$ at points.

Godfrey was doing a lot of run support. He was out of position on a few plays. However the Bradshaw play made his day look a lot worse than it really was. He made some really good tackles and was in position over the top to get INT's on tips. I mean you guys are taking away from him because his INT's were tipped? How many int's were dropped by other players? It was a total secondary loss yesterday. Our D line wasn't getting enough pressure and our line backers were getting blocked consistently in the second half. Total team failure. No one should lose their position over that game. Well except for that goal line play calling was horrible.

I'd put this more on the coaching staff than entirely on Godfrey. Didn't appear to me that anyone in the secondary was prepared. Missed assignments, blown coverages, poor tackling...all of the guys looked dazed and confused.

No, Godfrey's horrific S play in 2008 and 2009 only confirm what we saw yesterday. The worst starting S in the NFL plays in Carolina. Pugh should be on the field with Martin Sunday....however Fox will insist Godfrey gives us the best chance to win.

the worst starting saftey in the NFL? please dude. please

um, I have been saying that since 2008. He was the worst starting S in 2008by a large margin.....but he was a rookie so he got a pass. His play has not improved at all since then. He has some FF's and some fluke INTs...he is still the same guy.

Name a S with a combo of worse coverage and ability to come up and run down defenders in the open field? There isn't one. Godfrey can make a hit on a guy only if he can get there before he gets going and into the open field....that is it. That ain't a S in the NFL though.

Name a worse starting S in the NFL that has started the past 2 seasons? It can't be done.

I made a topic similar on how good would our D be if we had a Polamalu type safety. However I think your over reacting. Please rewatch the game objectively if you have it. Godfrey had very good run support (except for the bradshaw play). Team coverage was bad all around. Also saying he had some FF's and fluke INT's? So if Ed Reed gets a tip INT it's because he is a great safety, but if it's Godfrey its a fluke? Until there is a fluke int stat you need to let that argument rest. His first year, and first half of last year he may have been one of the bottom 7 starting safeties in the league, however since his comeback from injury he has played fairly well. No pro-bowler but ok. However lumping all the secondary problems yesterday on him is unfair. Really rewatch the game objectively.

Oh and if I actually felt like looking, I'm pretty sure there were worst safeties in Atlanta, KC and St Louis. I just don't particularly feel like looking up their names.

I have been all over Godfrey since 2008. This isn't a knee jerk reaction. I always watch him closely. Godfrey is good in run support. That still doesn't change the fact he is flat out horrible in coverage and can't handle opponents when they are in the open field. He is a S for crying out loud.

Ed Reed may get a fluke pick here and there....that is something added to his overall good play. Godfrey's FF's after his injury.....his still didn't show improvement in any of the areas that plagued him all of 2008 and before the injury in 09. FF's didn't mean any of that got better.

With average S play that came would have been totally different.

Godfry was bad no doubt. But it naive to pull a guy one game in to the season. We had no pass rush.

you don't pull him for one game. you pull him based of his career and ineffectiveness playing S in the NFL. He isn't a S. Never has been. He just keeps starting, and starting, and starting here.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
