Is it time to break up Panthers, trade Smith?

(By Tom Sorensen, [email protected]) Steve Smith is a competitor. You can tell because after Carolina's first drive of the fourth quarter Sunday, a drive that ended with a punt, he came to the sideline and slowly shook his head. He grabbed a cup of Gatorade. He sat on a long bench. He was pensive. He was angry. He was alone. p/At the time, Smith had as many receptions as you did, fewer if you threw the ball around when you tailgated.

I'll shed a tear if Smith got traded

But to be honest with you, as sad as it may sound, Im not going to disagree with this. You look at this team and just to yourself... why not

Sad to be a Panthers fan right now

Im in the same boat with you. As much as I have enjoyed Smitty in Carolina, I would like to see him win a ring. Not gonna happen here in our near future.

Sorenson just hit a new low in reporting. There is a solution here and it is simple. Throw the damn ball to Smith and let him do his thing. He wasn't unhappy the past 2 weeks when Moore looked for him and hit him for a TD each game. Truth is Smitty expereinced what we all saw. Smitty was open on several occasions and Clausen was already checking down for a 3 yard gain before the play was fuly developed. Unless Clausen actually throws the ball down the field and finds a way to get it to Smitty, this won't be the last temper tantrum. Clausen needs Smitty and needs to find a way to get him ball. Otherwise this really will be David Carr part 2.

we would not win a game this season if we traded Smith(unless we face a team resting their starters at the end of the season, and even then..)

plus, he's 31. we'd be lucky to get a 2nd round pick for him. Cardinals only got a 3rd and 4th round pick for Boldin, just to put into perspective how valuable receivers are.

he should NOT be traded.

    • There is a Grand Canyon-sized chasm between your opinion and the opinions of most former player hockey guys who do this for a living.
    • I can only imagine the **** eating grins on the committee right now. "Oh, Bama didn't deserve it? Oh, Miami didn't deserve it? Suck it, haters!" lol
    • To say that, is gaslighting, because it isn’t true. I mean, maybe one or two people do that but it isn’t the predominant behavior. Even Frank has given him credit. I think particularly the Rams game. A couple of glowing posts.   I know I have. Gotta be honest about it because if you aren’t it undermines what else you say.  But the degree of how far I go with credit, in terms of it being a projection of future performance? Not very far. Acknowledge it, but require more of it. There is a lot of bad play to offset.    I tried to remain passive while the last 9 games (post ankle injury) played out. It is just really hard when the lows won’t go away. I failed. As high as a couple of those highs were, there isn’t enough.    I know it is premature to just say I want to move on, made my decision after 6 of those games ended up pretty much really good or not good enough, but I have had enough of being patient and letting him show the reality either way.  So in my view, he Could still validate himself to a decent degree if he smokes the last three starts. But also in my view I don’t expect to see it. Maybe one more high quality start, would be my expectation. So yes he could still somehow justify having the job next year. If that happened I still wouldn’t have much faith given the last three years and all that has transpired. Again, there is a lot of bad play to offset.
