Appreciation For Jake Delhomme

Vertical Asymtope

Recommended Posts

Here are my facts

Jake Delhomme

17th in passing yards

25th in completion %

16th in touchdowns

tied for 9th most interceptions

21st QB rating

And here are mine

48-30 record as Panthers starter

.615 Winning Percentage

5-2 Postseason Record

18 comebacks with the Panthers, which ranks number 1 since that time

95.0 Playoff QB Rating

113.6 Super Bowl QB Rating

5 out of 7 playoff games with a QB rating of over 100 (on of those 2 games he did not have a 100 rating was 96.6)

Why? Because I think comebacks are grossly overrated when judging a QB? Just like wins, comebacks have to be team efforts. Doesn't do any good to comeback if your defense just allows your opponent to pull a comeback on you. I also hate judging QBs on wins and especially Super Bowl wins. QBs get far too much credit and blame most of the time for wins and losses in my opinion.

You are using the word 'average' in the same sense as the words as 'horrible' or 'atrocious.' An average starting QB in this league is not bad at all. They don't exactly grow on trees. With all of this team's weapons, it doesn't need a Peyton Manning at QB.

I sure as hell would rather start an average and dependable QB then have to dig Vinny Testaverde out of the graveyard again.

Brilliant.

I never realized how bad guys like John Elway, Brett Favre, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw and Tom Brady really sucked until I read that post.

So what if they led a bunch of fourth quarter comebacks? If they would have played better the other three quarters they wouldn't have needed those comebacks.

I feel much more enlightened now :)

I didn't even read past your first sentence...would you stop doing that bullshit?!?!??!!?!!??!!?!?!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

fug the comparisons, Jake Delhomme needs to NOT TURN THE BALL OVER for this team to have a chance to win. Thank god we overcame tonight, but quit sugar coating poo...STOP WITH THE RETARD poo ALREADY!!!

Please read my stats before you start yelling we cannot win with Jake. They guy has always turned the ball more than we would have liked, but he has still won 62% of his games.

He didn't win a damn thing. The Panthers have won 62% of the games he's started. It's a freaking team game and this year Jake has had a very average contribution while our defense and rushing attack are top 10. Plus, what do those stats have to do with how he's playing this year?

No, I didn't. I said he's nowhere near the worse QB, but he's not close to the best either. Hence, he's average.

Here are my facts

Jake Delhomme

17th in passing yards

25th in completion %

16th in touchdowns

tied for 9th most interceptions

21st QB rating

Let's take a look at these "facts" shall we.

Passing yards

#1 - Drew Brees, Team Record: 7-6, last in NFC South

#21 - Kerry Collins, Team Record, 12-1, best in NFL

Completion Percentage

Appreciably Better: Brett Favre, Phillip Rivers, Trent Edwards, Tony Romo

In the vicinity: Donovan McNabb, Ben Roethlisberger, Kyle Orton

Currently Worse: Marc Bulger, Matt Hasselbeck, Derek Anderson

Touchdowns

Phillip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers are in the top ten in this category. Their teams are currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs. The Panthers, on the other hand, are concentrating on rushing TDs.

Interceptions

Tied for ninth? You seriously thought that was worth making a point of?

Fair enough though. Here are the guys ranked 1-8 (i.e. the guys with more picks than Delhomme).

1t - Brett Favre

1t - Gus Frerotte

3t - Drew Brees

3t - Jay Cutler

5t - Marc Bulger

5t - Peyton Manning

5t - Ben Roethlisberger

5t - Kurt Warner

Those guys must really suck.

Rating

Again, a little perspective.

#1 - Phillip Rivers (Chargers, 5-8)

#3 - Tony Romo (looked great yesterday, didn't he?)

#8 - Aaron Rodgers (Packers, also 5-8)

#19 - Kerry Collins, (Titans, still 12-1)

#23 - Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers, 10-3, like the Panthers)

#31 - Matt Hasselbeck (apparently the second worst QB in the league)

I've generally been onf the philosophy that rankings don't mean jack. However, if you put as much stock in them as you claim to, you might want to take a look at the implications of the ones you've posted here.

Ain't math grand? :willy_nilly:

You misunderstood what I meant. I said that you were using the word 'average' in the same place that someone would use the word 'horrible.'

League average QB > Replacement Level QB

It has everything to do with how he is playing this year. If there is one quote you can take from the Panthers is that "stats are for losers". All I care about, all the team cares about is winning. And with Jake behind center all he has done is won, and has performed well abover average in big games. We can win with Jake, and has proved he can put up the stats when it matters most.

Before Manning won a Super Bowl he had much better "stats" than Tom Brady, but he could not do anything in the playoffs. If I remember correctly he got shut out by Chad Pennington and the Jets. Back then any football fan with a brain would have told you they would have taken Brady over Manning even though Manning had the better "stats".

"Stats are for losers", and you my friend are a loser.

not about the stats. not about the numbers.

it's about winning. more often than not we win when he is at the helm.

most importantly is how the team, coaches and players and owners, look to him.

he is th leader on that team that everyone looks to. very few QBs or players in this league could do that. he is the right guy at the right time. it won't take much for us to get the passing game on fire again. our running game is finally going to be getting the attention and respect it deserves from DCs which will help open things up in the passing game.

he is still getting used to his improved arm but i can tell he is making adjustments. before he was overthrowing most everything now he is trying to compensate and threw a few short. all his INTs can't be blamed on him. might be seen as making excuses but it is the truth.

there is a reason that the team hasn't been looking elsewhere for a QB. jake is who they want to be QB. i trust their judgment. i have seen enough from him in different situations to believe they know what they are doing in that regard.

Stats may not tell everything, but wins and loses involve a whole team...

    • I'm seeing some revisionist history being applied in here about things. Such is the life of a Panthers fan I suppose. Some of us would like to forget the debacle last year. But let's not just throw poo out there that isn't true. We ran a fugton of shotgun plays last year and it wasn't just because our coaching staff was trash. Anyone with eyes could see it was to the direct benefit of BY and his phsyical limitations. He ran virtually no under center plays with Alabama and we talked at length about that before the draft. We can only have these circular arguments about last seasons coaching ineptitude so many times. Yes it was bad. The QB play was horrific at times as well. But let's not forget the fact that there were games where mediocre at best backup opposing QB's like Tyson Bagent and CJ Beathard looked much better than our own QB. We need to see better results fast with Canales.
