Fox: Clausen "more than likely" to start

Panthers coach John Fox said rookie QB Jimmy Clausen would "more than likely" start this week against New Orleans.

As a nine-year veteran of translating Fox, that means yes, in fact, he will.

He didn't offer much in the way of specifics, but seemed generally encouraged by Clausen's play -- other than the fumbles.

He was in one of the moods he gets in from time to time, blowing off any suggestions of specific areas of weaknesses.

Asked about the offensive line problems, Fox said that "unlike the media," he wasn't getting into specific areas of concern.

-- No real update on LB Jamar Williams (neck), but had an interesting exchange when asked whether any of the existing reserves could play in the middle.

"We have an alternate plan," he said, without delving into the alternate.

If nothing else, that points to the fact that they're at least a bit uncertain about the prospects of playing LBs Nic Harris, Jordan Senn or Eric Norwood as defensive regulars.

I agree with Fox on this one. They pulled the trigger. Trying to back out on Clausen now would only screw him up, and show that Fox is treading water in a sinking ship.

What they need to do is start activating backup O-linemen. Bench Gross's ass. Shake 'em up. You don't need to worry about messing up line chemistry because they have none.

      ESPN has a whole is just hot takes and the dumbest takes possible. That is why it sucks so badly. They intentionally drag everything down to a lightspeed retarded level so that it is unwatchable. No jounalism, no nuance, no in depth analysis....just idiot after idiot blabbering/shouting about some hot button issue that they really have no real strong opinions about until the camera is rolling.

      Young is the overwhelming priority. We have ample time on them and it's far easier to pivot at WR than QB. Remember that 2026 is year 4 for Bryce. That is 5th year option decision time and also the prime time to attempt to regain resources if a pivot is made. The odds of gaining any assets in a trade afterwards plumment very rapidly(all this depending on performance, obviously). At the end of that cycle, now we are likely in a $45+ million territory for him to remain.  So that decision trumps all others by a mile when it comes to personnel.
