Potential Head Coaches

Speaking of Luck, I'm currently watching the Stanford vs. Cal game. Luck only had 6 passing yards in the first quarter, and against a team that is unranked. Granted he had a fantastic run for big yardage, but that's not what we are looking at (scrambling is great, but we are talking about passing here). Now isn't 1st quarter production on offense what we are looking for? I know the kid is a great QB, probably something special. But the whole game so far I've been begging for a pass play in which I don't have to compare Andrew Luck to Byron Leftwich (that 6 yard pass in the 1st quarter had a massive windup).

Not a hater, if we draft him great. I will get excited and get his jersey. I am just expecting some lights out play from him.

he can scramble and run, but that isn't something that he does often. he'd much rather stay in the pocket and make a big play downfield if he can.

btw...that's 132 yards on 10 throws and 7 completions now, plus a TD. i wouldn't put too much stock into what he did in the first quarter. they got the lead and are in control of the game. 24-0 with a couple minutes left in the first half. btw...what would fox do with that kind of lead? harbaugh won't let it go.

Agreed guys. It was after my post that he really started dominating. It's amazing what a young QB (or any QB really) can do when the running game opens up the passing attack. Something our offense hasn't had the luxury of having.

I hope we have the #1 pick. That way, if Clausen does show progression we can trade down, if he doesn't show progression we have a franchise QB secured.

well, that run game works so well because the defense knows that they have to account for luck being able to throw the ball. they respect that passing game and they should. cal has a pretty good defense, in spite of not being ranked. most likely what happened was they had to choose between trying to stop the passing game so stanford was able capitalize on that and run the ball. then cal had to try and pay attention to the run game and then the passing game opened up.

if you don't have a passing game that defenses worry about, your run game won't succeed.

Im on the Jim Harbaugh/ Luck train... need to update my sig.

I like the kid a lot. But I'm not throwing Clausen under the bus just yet. I will let you know by week 16. I really wish JC could match up against the Ravens this Sunday. I would like to see if he could hold his own against a dominate defense. Hopefully he's back to show us if he has what it takes next week. Unless BSP just dominates (lol).

it's not a matter of throwing clausen under the bus.

imo, it's like comparing eli to peyton. eli is a pretty decent QB...but he's no peyton. if you have eli and had a chance at peyton, who would you choose?

clausen might be a good QB, but if you have a chance to get a better QB, why wouldn't you? esp. if you really don't have a whole lot of time or money invested?

Every QB picked to go first overall "is just special"

Clausen was "is just special" last year.

I don't see how people let the wool slide back down over their eyes every year.

Traditional PantherFan philosophy of the grass is always greener.

it's thinking like that which resulted in far too many years of jake delhomme.

I never really looked at it that way. I agree with you. Hopefully he comes out this year and we scure the #1 pick. But my question is... How do you know Harbaugh is looking to coach Pro next season? And if he did, what makes him take the Panthers over the 49ers or even the Cowboys? Dallas already has all the tools on offense to suit his Power Running game with great WR's. He might want a championship now and not later. Plus he is only 27-21 at Stanford. Not much experience at the college level IMO. But I do love his creativity.

Anyone got an answer?

    • Congratulations do they know who the father is?
    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
