Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Going deeper into the backgrounds of Panther coaches has been amusing. Take this little tidbit, for example.

In 1983, OL Coach Dave Magazu was a graduate assistant / coaching intern working with the offensive line at the University of Michigan.

There was a new freshman quarterback that year. He wasn't a starter yet. the starter, ironically enough, was a guy named Steve Smith :sosp:

The freshman's name? Well, here's a tip. His jersey number was 4.

Mr. Scot, maybe our ideal two candidates end up being Grimm and Harbaugh but do you really think we'll be able to pick between them? What about other clubs?

I hope the CBA is done before either of them have to worry about it.

that being said, a certain someone claims to have inside info into it and says Harbaugh has already told people he's leaving for the NFL. There's a thread on it a bit down the page. Believe it (or not) if you wish!

I really hope the CBA gets done by then as well, but Luck has to make his decision by Jan. 14, I believe, so there is not a lot of time for the league and players to work things out.

And I hope this source is correct, but I still wonder if he'll decide to try and win the championship if Luck decides to stay. Somehow, I think this will go down to the wire...and depend on what he thinks about the teams looking for a coach.

Trgovac coached there 84-85. I don't think I'd put an exceptional amount of worry into it.

Though, it's amazing how few people knew that Fox, Sunseri, O'Brien were coaches under Mike Gottfried at Pitt, with Danny Crossman as a player.

Along with some guy named Jack Harbaugh, with son Jon in tow for one of those years.

I wonder if Jack would coach here, given that he's on staff at Stanford now.

Spent enough time tonight on current assistants. Too tired to look at the former ones

My biggest wonder right now is what reaction John Fox would have if Jim Harbaugh were to be courted for the job.

Would Fox say "don't do it; you don't want to work here; they screwed me over" or would he suggest to Jim that it's a great opportunity to coach in the NFL with a young team?

From what I've seen of Fox, my guess is that he's be happy for Jim to get the opportunity rather than being vindictive. But of course, there's no way to know for sure.

Doubt it's ironclad.

Harbaugh as head coach, his old teammate Rivera at DC, protege' Andrew Luck as the quarterback of the future with Geep Chryst as his QB coach, Brian Baker retained to coach DL...

If we got all that, I'd be pretty stoked for next September.

Of course, the fact that we've speculated on it now probably means none of it'll happen crying.gif

still need an OC.

and i'm still saying this guy...

Not sure that's the guy you talk to, right now. I might talk to current assistants you know there, but the situation with Fox is toxic a few days after he walks, even if they're acquainted through family.

But yeah, I'd forgotten the old man is currently on staff at Stanford.

I'll be honest, getting him on board in some fashion makes the whole thing just a hair more interesting.

Why do people think Rivera's going to be an available DC again? I'm guessing under the idea that Turner is going to be fired? I'm not expecting that, so I'm not expecting they'll somehow let a coordinator out of a contract.

I think Turner being dumped is a possibility. Don't know that I'd consider it a likelihood though. With AJ Smith in charge, who knows?

Chryst could come in handy there, or one of the Beathards (Bobby or Jeff).

Well, throw another log on the fire :sosp:

When Harbaugh went to the Chargers in 1999, one of the scouts working under GM Bobby Beathard was Don Gregory, currently the Panthers Director of College Scouting.

Pretty safe bet that Beathard's son Jeff was on staff at the time too. Jeff joined his dad in San Diego in 94. Today, he's a regional scout for the Panthers, covering the Northeast.

Starting to think the list of Panther employees who aren't acquainted with Jim Harbaugh might be shorter
