Does Jake have tunnel vision?

Even the stats show he has that problem. Big deal Smith and Moose are the #1 and #2 receivers Jake still locks on players.

Another brilliant nugget of bullshit from our resident pessimist.

The reason that Hackett and Jarret did not have many receptions is that they were SELDOM on the field. We consistently ran 1 and 2 receiver sets this season. We seldom had 3 or 4 WR's on the field.

We actually threw the ball 209 times out of 3 and 4 wide sets compared to 153 out of 2 wide sets.

Wow. Where did you get that info?

Would that include when our Tes split off and lined up as a Wr? Otherwise that is pretty intruiging numbers considering the percentage of throws at the 'other' Wrs. Considering Jarrett and Hackett started three games between them, makes you wonder if we ever threw to the third option and beyond.

One thing that stands out to me looking at that link.

Category: By Offensive Motion

No motion - 5 from 10

We only threw the ball 10 times with motion

Why would we not try and get Smith into favorable matchups and have him move around after we are set. I dunno that stat just seemed a touch odd to me.

EDIT Having looked at other Qbs this clearly is not a big issue as I thought...

I call Bullshit on those stats. Said we throew 98 times out of a 4 WR set. Hell, we did not ever have 4 WR's active for a game.

Sliding a TE out wide does not count.

Regardless, our Tes and 'other' Wrs still had little to no impact after the first two games. Whether it was a Wr, Hb or Te out there they still were not passed too, just because you disagree with the way they list 4 receiver sets, you can't refute the implications.

How do you figure it doesn't count?

When you are split 5 wide, there are almost NEVER 5 actual WR's in that formation.

The only reason you guys might not realize we do use a 4 wide formation is because it doesn't appear wide at all. The Singleback 4WR Tight formation is what it is called in Madden, but it is when everyone is stacked inside. We almost exclusively used it for passing situations but I wouldn't mind actually seeing a real 4WR set.

Actually, the guy we've never ever really replaced was Ricky Proehl. Jake did a pretty good job of finding him as well as Moose and Smith when he first became the starter. Proehl was big during the playoff run of '05, after Moose had left.

Yeah, to Wienke... lol

Jake is an average QB and with the running game we have, offensive line we need to keep and WR corps we have in place we should be fine this year. IMO, a new QB coach is going to help. If our defense can improve, we should be another good team this year - as we were last year minus the payoff game...

But you are missing my point he has stared down players in the past and missed wide open ones. Jake would get locked on one player and miss the other one. Didnt matter who it was. He missed Smitty wide open a couple of times same as Moose.

I'm with Squirrel on this one. I have seen it too many times. Too many times.

I don't hate Jake, I just call them as I see them. Other top QBs, or particularly those who make top QB money, do not make the ill-advised decisions that Jake makes when zeroing in on a covered target while other options have a better probability of actually making the catch (and mitigating Jake's mistakes). Moreover, no one is ever going to mistake Jake for Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or even Ben Roethlisberger. They might mistake him for an aged Brett Favre (minus a ring) if that makes you feel better.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
