Yasinskas seems absolutely certain that Hurney is confident enough in Clausen that he will pass on Luck if he declares. This coming from his recent posts on the matter.

Yas has some inside info, so it's very possible he is on the right track.

I hope not.

Hurney knows Clausen is playing horrible don't even try to think otherwise.

That said Hurney also probably knows a lot more about why exactly Clausen is playing horrible than most of us and whether it is something that can be solved or if it is a lost cause.

well, that is simple. Fox and Hurney have always been viewed as a package deal. Goodbye Hurney.

Jerry ain't dumb. If he goes into next year w/ Clausen being the guy.......that will hurt his pocketbook. Fans would be dumb to continue to pump money into a franchise doing that kind of stuff.

I have a problem with your effort to give Jimmy Clausen any type of hope in NC. You have influence with our fan base and some of our bigwigs inside the organization. Please, please stop trying to find hope in this guy.

Pat Yasinskas: I never have said I think Clausen is the answer. All I've said (repeatedly) is I think it's impossible to judge him on his performance this season because of the entire meltdown all around him. Maybe he ends up being a bust and maybe he ends up being a decent starter in the NFL. I just don't think you can tell much of anything at this point. Also, part of the reason I write that is because, yes, I do talk to some people in the organization who will still be around next year and some of them actually believe Clausen can be good. Part of my job is to let you know what the decision makers are thinking. We don't know what the new coach will see in Clausen, but I'm just trying to let you know that some important people want to see what he can do when given a fair shot in a legitimate NFL offense. I don't know if that's a good idea or a bad idea, but Carolina fans might want to start facing reality and bracing themselves for more of Clausen.

Great, so the Panthers get the first pick in the draft. The conventional wisdom is that the first player picked in the draft will be Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.

Oh, that’s just wonderful. I can see it now. About this time next year, the team’s “leader’’ and best player will come out and say something like “He ain’t in Stanford anymore, that’s for sure’’.

Listen, I know this might not be what a lot of Carolina fans want to hear, but I think there’s still a good chance Jimmy Clausen is the quarterback of this team going forward. I’m not saying I’m sold on Clausen by any means. In fact, I don’t think you can even judge him on this season because he’s been in an offense that’s been beyond dysfunctional.

I’m saying Clausen might be the guy going forward because the people that will be sticking around with the Panthers next season (and that list doesn’t include coach John Fox) still think Clausen can be a good NFL quarterback.

That said, those same people also realize they might not even a choice other than to take a talent like Luck. But other than the Panthers winning a couple of their last three games, there are a couple scenarios where the Panthers might not end up with Luck.

First off, there’s a common assumption that Luck, a junior, automatically will enter the draft. Some people who are watching this situation very closely are saying they’re hearing Luck might stay at Stanford for his senior season.

Then, there’s one other thing to keep in mind. It’s entirely possible the Panthers could try to trade out of the top spot and add some additional picks. They did that once before.

In their expansion season (1995), the Panthers briefly held the No. 1 pick. Then, they traded out of that spot. Cincinnati had the first pick and took Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter. Carolina took Penn State quarterback Kerry Collins with the fifth overall pick.

Speaking of Penn State guys, when I was talking to Carolina general manager Marty Hurney not too long ago, I offered him a little advice. I told him he can turn this thing around if he goes out and drafts some more Penn State players.

Then, I told Hurney who I think he should take with the No. 1 overall pick -- Penn State running back Evan Royster. I was serious about the first part, but even a Penn State fan can’t really believe Royster is the top pick in the draft or even a first-round choice.

Hurney knew I was joking and laughed. It was kind of nice to hear a laugh from a guy who hasn’t been able to do much of that recently.

      So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.

      Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
