Why the pass game isn't working

Not really. I am saying Clausen needs to use the middle of the field. period. OL, Davidson, rookie....non of those are reasons for him not doing such. Moore was brought up here to show what Davidson is doing w/ Steve Smith this season. Smitty made those plays for Moore. He can do it for Clausen. Those are the routes Smitty is now running in Carolina.

what is the biggest noncoach issue then?

Biggest noncoach issue?

IMO, Lack of experience. AND Jimmay isn't the only one I'm talking about. He is looking for WRs to be as open as he had in school. That doesn't happen in the NFL. That is why he doesn't throw in the middle as much as the guy with 2 more years experience, he simply doesn't see the reciever as open. It'll come with time. Remember, he didn't get work with the starters like other rookies and his reps have not been consistent, with Moore coming back for a few weeks after the break, then his own concusion etc.

The O-line has also lacked experience working together. The right side hasn't settled in all year. Other changes throughout the year didn't help them get on the same page, but we seem to be getting into a rhythm now especially in the running game. In passing situations, teams seem to be doubling Smitty, and blitzing. The O-line isn't being too successful at picking that up and the other WR (more rookies) aren't adjusting their routes.

I look at this year as similar to the '89 Cowboys. We have some talent in quite a few spots. We just have a few holes to fill. Unlike the Cowboys, we don't have a Hershel Walker type trade that we can make, not with an RB anyway. I know Clausen will never put up Brees, Manning, or Brady type numbers, but can he put up Aikman typr numbers? I think he can, and that gives us the #1 pick up for bid.

well, ST and the D are decent....not to mention a run game that has been producing as a top unit in the NFL recently (which is the norm the past few seasons).

Good backfield, experienced TEs, a VERY experienced WR. 2 Pro Bowlers on the OL.

I still think it is a tough sale that QB play isn't the biggest issue. Sure, he has a rookie WR on the field at all times but I still think that is a tough arguement that inexperience is the bigger issue.

Smitty has seen double teams for years. Clausen doesn't look for him period. In single coverage and when they create match up problems for the D with him.

Inexperience at the QB position allows defenses to throw a lot at the OL, Jimmy's lack of recognition and calls at the line also work against the OL.

I also think the Troy and Peyton comparison are very lacking. Both of those QBs showed signifcantly better QB play as rookies. Just b/c a rookie had a rough year doesn't mean Clausen is comparable. I mean Troy threw 4 TDs in a game as a rookie. In another he nearly threw for 400 yards in a game. Both Troy and Peyton gave teams a reason to believe they had something to offer down the road. Jimmy has hit 2 guys for TDs (a HUGE game inbetween them) when a defender wasn't within 10 yards of them when the pass got there....neither were even very good throws.

simple, first off there are 3 rookies in the passing game. Clausen (who could be good, but wont get that chance in Carolina, will get released and go to a team and likely become good), Gettis (good 3rd reciever) and LaFell (on and off). that's the first problem, the 2nd is the offensive line seems to have forgotten how to pass protect. Honestly, even with Luck (who we will likely get) unless we get a reciever and a guard and possibly a backup tackle, i cant see Luck winning anymore than 3 games. Smith is as good as they come, but LaFell and Gettis need to grow up and the line needs to protect better.

    • New season new teams. Everyone we face has improved their team as well. There's now a full season of tape on Canales's offense and Bryce running it. When they win 7 games I will become a believer.
    • I mean I think its a bit disingenuous to call basically anyone here a casual fan. I don't think the casual fan creates a profile then logs into it, in the offseason, to comments on mundane offseason topics.. I dont think anyone on here would be considered a casual fan. That said, I get your point. My POV is from the player. They sign this contract, move their family because of these contracts. When Clowney came him, we basically had a coming home party for him.  So yeah, I get why we did it and I know that ultimately the owner doesnt 'save' money, but I can feel for the human side of the player, which is why I want them to get all they can while they can.
    • My guess is the NBA will either send Flagg back “home” to the Northeast in Brooklyn or Washington, or San Antonio so that they can keep building around Wemby. If I was a betting man I would take the odds on the Spurs. This definitely feels like a #1 pick that they will rig.
