Why stick with Jimmy Clausen?

There is a breakdown of new HCs the past 3 years......there has been an absurd number of hires during that span. New HCs get rid of the old QBs with the first 2 seasons.

The only QB you posted that wasn't replaced when a new coach arrived was Rivers. Aaron Rodgers could be included as well with Rivers as he never played except under the new coach.

The other list is LONG. 2 years or less and new HCs just about always find their own QB to bring in. I will try to find the old post where the new HC's and broken down.

The point of the argument is, that it wasn't stupid at the time they drafted Clausen on the basis that the new coach would throw him away simply because he was from a previous coaching regime.

Of course the New coaches threw the others(Losman, Anderson, Carr) away. But that was because they sucked, not because the were from the old regime. The New HC gave them a chance to be the starters on the team. Had they taken advantage of it and played well, then the new HC's wouldve kept them, unless a better oppurtunity arose.

I don't think it was so much them being given a chance......just the simple fact it takes time to find someone new to bring in. I highly doubt that in 2012 Clausen, Pike, or Moore will be on the roster. It is part of the whole starting fresh idea. Fox got his hands on them all.

If the starters I listed (Carr, Quinn, Losman) played at a similar level Rogers and Rivers did when they were given a chance, then the coaches wouldve kept them as starters.

Clausen and Moore very well could be off this team. But that would have alot more to do with the fact that they played pretty bad football.

Had Clausen not played at all this year, then I think the new HC wouldve given him a chance to earn starting gig from competiton.

fwiw...this isn't meant to be a hate on jimmy thread.

i am genuinely interested in hearing why people think that clausen is worth giving another shot as starting QB and did well enough to say we don't need to try and upgrade.

i don't want to hear excuses about how bad the team was or the coaching was.

what was it that you saw in clausen that makes you think he will be good as a franchise QB?

Try as i might and after watching Clausen all year.i can't think of a single reason he will ever be our franchise QB of the future. Sorry...

so the best thing you could say is that he isn't as scared as he was at the beginning. awesome.

Ok so here goes:

1. He completed 68% of his throws under 10 yards

2. Never had a multiple interception game

3. 10% of his throws were over 20 yards, 28% over 10 yards

4. He was sacked 9.59% of his dropbacks, 3rd most in the NFL

5. 7.33% of his throws were dropped, 8th most in the NFL

Explanations

1. Sam Bradford's 74% completion is better, but 68% is still pretty essential at this level. Yes he did use the checkdown, but for a rookie that is somewhat refreshing. When our running game started to click he managed to extend or create manageable down and distances with these reliable short passes. Not everyone can do this or has the patience to take what the defence is offering.

2. Again with our running game due to blossom next year if DWill is back, then this is absolutely vital we do not have a QB who self destructs. If we adopt a more QB friendly system, then this patience and not forcing the ball so much will pay off as our system wil do a lot for the QB

3. This is only significant when considering my post on page 6 which was made after the Arizona game in week 15. People were screaming at him for not progressing, with his lack of confidence in the deep ball being the main culprit. Whilst it's only around Matt Staford's levels, the change in just 3 games is pretty significant and shows that he is trying to be more progressive with his passing.

4. No matter how good you are, you can't do well unless you are upright, which he was amongst the most sacked in the NFL. Again people moaned at him being afraid of taking a hit and not standing in the pocket. Well against Atlanta he was 12/17 for 103 yards, 1 TD & 1 sack when he was blitzed. That IS progression.

5. Much was made of his rookie receivers, but across the offense our receivers dropped a lot of balls. Does not matter how well they are thrown, because if people can't catch, it often leaves you in unmanagable situations in down and distance.
