Is it an argument anymore????

A few weeks ago before the nightmare we called a playoff game against the cardinals, their were many smitty vs. fitzgerald discussions. I was one to come to smitty's defense and pretty much say i would take him over fitz but, now after that record-breaking postseason by fitz is it even a question anymore? Believe me I am a huge smitty fan aka smitty homer, but I cannot deny that fitz has now surpassed him in my mind. I believe he has set himself apart now as the best reciever in the league with andre johnson and smitty following along with some other guys. This is no knock against smitty he will still be in the discussion for the next 2 or 3 years so maybe he will prove otherwise, but for now I think you have to be crazy not to give fitz the nod. Pretty much a useless old argument but, just wanted to see what people think now a few weeks and huge fitz performances removed from the previous threads.

Smith makes most of his plays off of throws made in coverage where he can leap into the air and catch it. He could also take it to the house from anywhere on the field. Fitzgerald is almost the same way but can jump higher. Delhomme and Fitzgerald would be a match made in heaven. :D

No I'd still take Smith. Everyone is on Fitz's nuts because he's the one everyone's been looking at lately. He was the best WR in the playoffs for the past few weeks. If the panthers had some more games to play in the post season I'm sure we'd see Smith do the amazing things he always does. Plus Fitz has Boldin and Warner in that super pass offense, while Smith is relegated to an aging Moose and Jake "I always throw behind my WR" Delhomme.

Yea, hold up with that sentiment real quick and realize that Fitz has Kurt Warner throwing him the ball.

I wonder what Smith would be doing with Kurt.

Good thought I believe that Smiths numbers might greatly increase with a quarterback that can hit him in stride on occasion. I dont know if i can remember one time this season that jake threw a true deep ball and hit him in stride. It was always smitty having to catch it over his head, turn his body the other way, come back to the ball, or fall down to catch a deep pass.

Yea exactly, Smith has to be great just to even catch the damn ball.

I mean is it really so much to ask for the QB to make a good play so the receiver can really do his thing.

"Everyone is on Fitz's nuts because he's the one everyone's been looking at lately."

I remember watching him at the Tire Bowl in Charlotte when he played for Pitt. It was UVA vs Pitt...some pretty good future NFLers in that game...Fitzgerarld, Shaub (Bowl MVP), and Heath Miller. Fitzgerald was going into the game with an NCAA record 18 straight games with a TD....he was amazing then, and he's only going to get better.

I would trade Smitty for Fitz...simply because of age...nothing else.

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
