For those wanting a new QB

Gantt is probably right, the FO will not shake up the QB roster next season. I just want a draft pick for competition.

Anyone who has followed Fox and Hurney and their QB philosophies over the past seven years knows that Gantt is just being logical here.

Basenez's is an emergency 3rd QB at best IMO. If (big if) we finally have a QB coach that teaches fundamentals and can develop QBs, then finding some competition that has the raw talent to start is finally an option. Good competition instead of just another arm to run plays would make all our QBs better. Having an excess of talent at this position would cause this fanbase to meltdown when we have to release one of them though. Heaven forbid we let somebody go that was successful elsewhere in the process of finding the right guy for us.

Gantt is an idiot.

How did you come up with this conclusion based on his article?

Gantt is exactly right. If you really believe ANY QB will be on the roster other than Delhomme, McCown, and Moore (not just Delhomme, but all 3 won't change), then I have a huge bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. If you're interested, please PM me... I have the paper work all ready to go.

Guys, no offense, but what part of that article suggests to you that the Panthers have even the slightest interest in "competition"?

Basanez said the Panthers offered him a contract before he chose the clean slate offered by his hometown Bears. From the Panthers perspective, that would have brought back the top four spots on the depth chart from last season. If they were serious about bringing in a challenger for the top job, would they have bothered clogging up the works by trying to bring last year's practice-squadder back?

Delhomme, Josh McCown and Matt Moore are all under contract through 2009. And personally, I think it's more likely Delhomme gets an extension this offseason than shown the door.

We'll see, but all those folks wondering about Matt Cassell or Derek Anderson or whatever "next best thing," they see in the draft shouldn't hold their breath.

The only potential competition I see in camp this year is if they let McCown and Moore compete for the backup spot, and even that isn't a lock.

Gantt is probably right here. This year's depth chart is going to look a lot like last year's, and all the hoping in the world isn't going to change that.

(there are changes I'd like to see too, but I try to be realistic about the chances of them happening)

He's right about the contract too. The FO effed that one up big IMO (like they did with Pep's) and it is backloaded like a mofo due to several restructurings. His 11 m cap hit last year was ridiculous.

I thought it was 9 last season and 11 this next one if nothing is changed?

Of course I am getting old and my memory is not as good as it once was

#s I saw were 2008 hit was close to 11 mill, but you could be right since I have no idea where to get what it is going to be this year and you have a figure for it.

PC is right...and there aren't many QBs who can do that for most of a season anyway. Depending on people's evaluations of QBs, MAYBE 4-5.

    • I've shown you numerous comps for other tackles in the same age and talent range.  His contract, taking into account his age, health, etc.  is the going rate.  It's a fair deal. I've shown you examples of how long it usually takes to find even an average replacement.  Hell, look at every tackle that has ever started for the Panthers.  How many would you consider a success?  They are not easy to find. After everything we've done with this team since drafting Bryce why would we decide to let our best linemen go and add a huge question mark at tackle?   FA is a crapshoot in which any guy available will have cons/issues.  If not, they'll cost a fortune.   Outside of a first or maybe 2nd round pic next year it'll take a few years for a tackle to learn the position at the NFL level.  There are still questions about Icky. Every vet NFL player deals with maintenance.  Between the contract value and history I'm not overly worried about his knee.  I contend his knee issue isn't anything to be overly worried about.  It's not zero risk but it's an acceptable risk.  Every player we draft and every contract we sign has risk.  You're blowing up his own negative words about his knees and ignoring him saying he is healthy and the knee is a non issue.  You have a strong chicken little complex with this team.  Being he has always been a Panther they are very aware of any health issues. We paid now because now is cheaper.  If his knee was really an issue they would have waited.  That tells me it's not the issue you want it to be.
