If that evidence had been made public, maybe more kids quit playing football and/or more advancements in helmet technology occur sooner.  I don't remember the facts of the NFL and CTE but there were allegations they covered up research.  

That charge was made by the doctor that they made a movie about, but I've also seen commentary from other doctors (not employed by the NFL) who have said his research is kind of sketchy.

He never played past high school, and his high school coach has said that he never had any head injuries, or many injuries at all other than a one-time ankle injury.

He certainly may have been mentally ill, but it doesn't sound like CTE had anything to do with it.
