Cam gets defensive in an interview

The one problem with the whole "well he wasn't really getting defensive thing" is that Cam Newton has basically admitted that he did get defensive and that teams came at him from a variety of angles.

Nobody is perfect, though. Just because he got defensive does not mean that he failed in his interviews, nor does it mean that he did it in an interview with us (which is the most important for his stock as #1 IMO).

I may have missed it but he said teams "keep you on your toes". FWIW. Still don't know who would run to the press to leak this info and what their motivation would be :skep:

I feel confident that we'll pick a D-Lineman with the #1 pick but perhaps Cam Newton is worth the gamble. The kid accounted for FIFTY!!! 5x10...50 touchdowns last year. And a lot of those were against some nasty SEC defenses. How many did Clausen get? 3?

I don't know. Cam seems like a high risk for #1 since you usually want your #1 picks to be ready to go on day one, but maybe his raw talent is worth it. He just knows how to find that damn endzone. I can't wait to see him at that combine tomorrow. He had some issues with accuracy on shorter passes during the season, but that got better over the year. He was pretty good on the deep balls all year long though. His running and ability to shake tacklers is best in show this year.

I just need to see this guy get a little more mature before the start of the NFL season... which by looking at labor debate could be awhile.

Welcome to the huddle. I have only been here a little bit over a month and let me give you a little advice.

That was a very middle of the road, nuanced, objective post with some good logic and reasoning.

That won't cut it here.

First rule is be irrational. Facts get in the way of good debate. It is perfectly acceptable to relegate you entire argument to, "Yeah. Well you're a fuggin idiot." And that is an acceptable counterpoint here.

Second, with Cam Newton you can't play the middle of the road. There are two factions here. The "Nut Huggers" who are pro Cam, and the "Haters" who are anti Cam.

It is a bitter feud and you have to take a side. I am a "Nut Hugger" and I politely ask for you to come join our side of the fight. There are some rough days when Cam decides to talk in the third person and calls himself an icon and we have to explain that it is "endearing" and shows a "competitive edge" which we know is :icon_bs:. But we do it bc we can't give ground to the "Haters".

If you decide to join the "Haters" :( You have to make a commitment that Cam is already a guaranteed bust, a convict, ego maniac, that eats small children. He has too many questions, red flags, and daddy issues.

If you want to talk about Cam you have to join one of us. You think, "I can stay objective." I thought the same thing. Within two weeks Jackofalltrades, The real deal, MHS, and Scot from the "Haters" forced me to fully entrench myself in the "Nut Huggers" brigade.

I don't know exactly how it happened but now I just embrace it.

So welcome to the huddle. I am sure you will make your choice wisely.

OK first teeray since you have only been around for a month or so i have to wonder if you are a first overall pick TROLL. You know the type that just want to come in and talk about who a franchise you could care less about should draft.

Second your descriptions of the so called factions are way off. First the haters just realize what a boom or BUST prospect Cam is. yeah, he could be the rare running QB that defenses have to account for on every down..... but he could also be a project that will take a year or two to develop. OR worse yet he could be a man child who has his dollar signs in his eyes daddy make his business decisions. That does not mean i think he is a future convict or any other selected hyperbole BS you can come up with. It means i think there are safer picks. Fairley is another OVERHYPED prospect that worries me. It does not mean i think either are not gonna make it, it means i think they will make it in spite of themselves. if they do. The red flags are being waved and teams that ignore them could be very sorry. It's called buyer beware and Cam and Nick are the poster childs.

Yeah but you clearly think he eats small children. :) :)

First of all look at your post. Bust is capatilized. Check. "Man child with dollar signs in his eyes daddy make his business decisions" so... ego maniac with daddy issues. Check. Convict is for his past not future so you didn't really comment on that. And you didn't say anything about his red flags.

Yeah, see Mick Eye would be one of the "Haters". They sometimes veil it in the "I'm not saying he will be a bust but..." then tell you why he will be a bust.

That's okay. Us "Nut Huggers" like to veil ours with, "Of course there is some risk but..."

And I am not a troll!!!!!! I resent that remark. I am a Panther fan through and through.

See the "Haters" are such non-trusting people. How else would I know that Jason Peters may have been our worst 1st round draft pick. And Tim Biakabutuka has the hardest name to spell but the funnest name to say in Panthers history.

And that Rod "He Hate Me" Smart was a fan favorite even though he only played on special teams.

So skeptical my friend.

Not sure what to make of this. It really doesn't make much sense for any team to put this out unless they're trying to make teams ahead of them think twice about Cam. But at the same time, it might very well be true. It's also difficult to really imagine what "defensive" means. One person's "defensive" might be someone else's normal.

I find it hard to believe that Cam would go into this knowing that these interviews are his make-or-break and slip up like that - even if he wanted to get defensive, why not just fake it for the team?

Only thing for sure I can say is that it wasn't us. We have no reason to lie and drop Cam's stock; we're either taking him or trading out so someone else can.

Why is it hard to believe that he isn't perfect? People make mistakes. Hell, he referred to himself in third person at the combine. That uh, had to have been something he knew not to have done, too. It's not like it's going to scare us away but yeah.

There's a very good chance it's real. As to why it was leaked? Who knows. Maybe one person told another who told another who blabbed to Schefter. I don't think it is "Smoke screen" though.
