NFL Draft rumors: Post-Combine

Since you are one of the clearer thinkers here, i want to pose a question.

Since we are going to stick with the 4-3, and many teams going 3-4, is there any reason not to trade E Brown to a team needing an OLB for 3-4?

Right now, he seems like dead weight for a 4-3 team and an embarrasment that we traded up to nab.

Couple of things...

First off, all 4-3 defenses are not created equal. Fox and Meeks were running a Cover-2. I expect Rivera and McDermott will be running an offense that looks a lot more like the ones Jim Johnson ran with the Eagles. The Eagle defenses under Johnson have made effective use of undersized pass rushers before.

Now, specific to Brown. If you're Ron Rivera, one thing you really can't allow to enter into your thinking is how a guy got to be here. What matters now is whether he's worth keeping or not, and you can expect Rivera, McDermott and Eric Washington all to weigh in on that decision.

If they see something in him they think they can use, he'll stay and I'll have no issue. If they choose to deal him...well, it wouldn't be the first time we've moved on from a bad pick.

The more scouts I discuss Auburn QB Cam Newton with the more they are afraid of not only his off the field character, but the overall posse he could ultimately end up coming into the league with. They raised the concern of just how committed to football he will be and who in his camp could ultimately keep him distracted from developing. -Wes Bunting

I wonder if Gabbert has a "posse". Or maybe in his case, it is called a "circle of advisers", or "circle of friends". An interesting choice of words by Mr. Bunting.

I know this has very little to do with the Panthers but I dont think they are correct about saying Jones will go off the board before Green. So Jones had a better combine. The tape doesnt lie, Green carried the Georgia's offense and has consistently been great in every aspect of the game, which cant be said about jones. I dont think anyone is dumb enough to draft jones ahead of green based on the combine.

the Raiders you say?.....

no first round pick so that wont happen haha

Every prospect should have a little posse, but Cam Newton has enough people to create the 33rd NFL team.

Not trying to be argumentative, but can you enlighten me on who is in this posse? I know he has family, most notably his father, and then there is Warren Moon...who else?

Not accusing you, but people throw around these words that carry connotations pretty flippantly. It would be nice to know the facts before we make assumptions.

Brett Favre is another one. Cam also said that he has a lot of marketing guys, advisors etc. helping him out.

Brett Favre? What? Favre helped make the pitch to Cam to sign with his agent. He's not part of "team Newton." Cam has his father, Warren Moon, that QB coach who used to work with Big Ben, and some marketing people, which a lot of top draft prospects have.

Have you ever seen the green room on draft day? Every table is filled with people around the top prospects, yet I don't hear anyone saying "team so-and-so" every year.

Favre is a guy that he can call at anytime. Cam said that himself in an interview with NFLN. Say what you want, but I've yet to see a prospect with two HOFers being part of his team for their transition to the pros. There's a reason you don't hear other prospects having 'team so and so', it's because their pieces aren't all that high grade, it's because others don't prepare speeches for their press conference, it's because other prospects don't create their own workout and media days. You don't think there's a lot of people in his ear? You don't think Cam is different with other prospects in this regard? What can I say? The evidence is right in front of you.

I'm sure that is indeed true. I think you'll find that all the top prospects have a similar cast of characters. Cam may be a bit different because, for better or worse depending on your viewpoint, he is an attractive guy to the media.

Keep in mind, his media skills have nothing to do with how he plays football.

I just find it telling that Bunting used that word to describe Cam's influences. "Posse" carries a negative connotation that we all understand, and I have seen no evidence that he surrounds himself with criminals or enforcers.
