A woman from Dundee, MI is dead after what police are calling an accident almost beyond belief.

It happened around 2:10 p.m. Tuesday at 290 Midway in Dundee. Nancy Schafer, a mail carrier, stepped onto the concrete porch to deliver mail. She was on the phone with a fellow employee when the concrete porch gave way.

Sgt. Redmond says somehow the small porch cracked and Schafer fell eight to ten feet down a hole underneath the porch. Then 75 percent of the porch fell down with two huge pieces of concrete totaling about 500 lbs. landing on her chest.

Sgt. Redmond said the concrete was four inches thick.

The Fire Department came to the scene and found Schafer dead. Sgt. Redmond says it appears the hole used to be an entrance way to a door of the house that's now blocked off and was covered up by the current porch.

That shouldn't have passed inspection. But then again i'm sure it probably wasn't inspected.
