NFL Mock Draft v1.0: We will mock you

OK, so we're seven weeks out from the draft. Might as well have some fun, while we wait to see whether the guys in suits are interested in football being played this year.

(And frankly, as much as I'd rather be standing on the corner of 21st and K with the assembled sidewalk scribes, I know labor reports are more interesting to reporters than fans.)

So what say we mock? We'll do one each Thursday for the next few weeks, showing some possibilities for the teams at the top. It'll change, as teams will shuffle their boards as they look at guys. Consider it a guidebook rather than a map, a suggestion, if you will.

Or in other words, it'll change, so no hyperventilating:

1. Carolina: QB Cam Newton, Auburn

There's a lot of talk about him at the moment for a reason.

No one's sure if he's going to be good or not. But look around. There are questions about every quarterback in this draft, and he's got more physical gifts than any of them.

Is it a risky pick? It is.

Can it go horribly wrong? It can.

But here's the thing with Newton, you almost have to convince yourself he's not the guy first, because top-end QBs are rare. He has the chance to be one if he works, and the chance alone may make it a gamble worth taking.

Hah! Those bastards are pretty clever. Now the other teams will be fooled into thinking we're somewhat serious about Newton, and beg to trade up. Possibly giving us their entire '11 draft picks + their 1st , 2nd and 3rd from the '12 draft.

    • Lil Stanky 100% in the dot tonight... And our 2nd line has been our best offensive line this season. Maybe our 2C really was on the roster this whole time...?
    • That’s a grade I kind of expected tbh. I’m not a huge fan of NS, but he’s not as bad as what the huddle says he is minus the horrible game he had vs the Rams. I’ve always thought he’s often used as a scapegoat. The improved pass rush should hide his deficiencies a little bit better if he’s the game one starter. FS might have to be a position we punt on this year unless Thieneman falls to us at 19. The reality is, you're going to have a few average players in certain spots for a team with as many holes we had before free agency started. You can’t sign everyone.
    • I am by no means trying to say he's a world beater. I'm saying it's trending in the right direction. Especially when measured against himself.i think the team feel the same way or else they wouldn't have picked up his option. Plus I think there is a new idea in the NFL about these young QBs. Teams give up to soon. Browns gave up to soon on baker same with the jets on Geno and darnold. Maybe they are who you thought they were in the draft process and they need more time to develop than you originally planned. Either way. I do think he is as capable as darnold is as far as you can win a championship with him. And something he does have that darnold doesn't is he is clutch.  If I need one more drive and 2 mins to go I'm betting on Bryce and I am far from a homer, just going off his game winning drives. He has that dog in him on the last drive.
