MMO's for a noob

The Saltman

So I know TOR is almost 6 months away but I honestly haven't the slightest clue about MMO's. Do you play with a group of people and what if you don't have the time to play when they want to play and vice versa. Do they basically just kick you out of the group and you have to play solo? How does it all work?

Teach me.

Well, I play WoW so I can really only speak on that right now.

There's a lot of ways to play it though. You could be really casual and just level up, do dungeons at max level for gear, or just start a new character and work on a lot of "alt" characters. You could also do some PVP when you want.

If you wanted to be a bit more serious you could level your guy up, get geared the best you can, then do raids (10 or 25 man modes) to kill bosses. Some guilds raid 3-5 nights a week and are really hardcore. I raid like 2 nights a week with the guys I play with (and have been playing with off and on since WoW came out 6 years ago). Some people play WoW strictly for PVP. You can get really hardcore in pvp too and do arenas and BG's to get high rating and gear.

It's really a time sink and a place to just spend your time. If my friends stopped playing I'd probably quit too. They've made a game like WoW more casual over the years because that is where the money is.

If you're just getting into the Genre, may I humbly suggest Silkroad Online? It's a free MMO that's actually very playable. It's easy to get into, rewarding to play over the long run, and since it's free it's not all or nothing. you don't feel like you have to play all the time to make it worth your money. You play when it meets your schedule. I'll stop playing for months, (and once even for a whole year) and I can come back, my character is still in the system, and I can pick up right where I left off. Also, since it's free and users come and go, you can get in a guild and they don't expect you to be on every night. Only time I got kicked out was when I left for a year.

Sounds good. I doubt Ill have time to be in a guild but just wanted to make sure when I play the people playing with me will be in the same level. Is that what happens you are randomly put in a group with the same level characters?

I can't speak for other games, but in Silkroad you can do a party search that tells you all the parties that have been formed, a description of the mission they want to go on, and the levels of the members in the party. So you can filter down the group you want to party with. You send a message asking for a party invite, and if you get accepted an icon shows you where on the map your party is, so you can go meet them.

Or you put a group together yourself. You'll never get dropped into a random group. And I think that functionality is pretty consistent throughout the MMO genre.

I was playing LOTRO for a while, but haven't in months...

I enjoy playing solo, but having a couple good friends to call on if I need help with something, which is rare if you look into your character build and play style to fine tune it to what you want to accomplish...

Basically, it is a way to kill time when you are bored...

MMOs have become a glorified social network.

Truth.

Hell, Blizzard has tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to turn Battle.net into competition for Facebook.

But they are successful in a way I guess... because as far as the "Game" itself goes... only a handful of people really plays WoW because they like the "game" aspect of it. Most play it for bragging rights of who has the most uber equipment, or unique character model modifications.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
