The Panthers have reportedly made "significant progress" with free agent Jordan Gross

9 million per year is not cheap. Other than the Long contract which was way out of line with what he worth, Gorss is going to be one of the highest paid linemen in the game. Gross would make 8.75 million as a franchised player and he would have no guarantee for any more money down the road. With this contract he will likely make at least 20 milion guaranteed and have the potential for another 40 million or so. That is a tomn of money especially for a player who only this year was a pro-bowler. Up to now he was a good player but not worthy of top 5 money.

The market will correct itself.....Gross will not be no.2 for too long. Sometimes you have to overpay to keep your own. We were not in a position not to extend him...and losing Gross would weaken our depth so much we would be relying on journeymen and throwaway free-agents.

O-line is about continuity and experience and Gross gave us the hometown discount cause if he put himself out for a bidding war his contract would have been outrageous. So to this signing I say JUMANJI!

The only way i will be happy is when i actually see a deal get done............

so everyone do not just start cheering yet....plus everyone who keeps sayin tag Peps and Gross 1. you cant tag two players and 2 we tagged Gross last year (as a panthers fan prob should have known that one)

Well, how about we transition tag Gross and Franchise tag Peppers. I think that would be the best option.

I somewhat agree but who out there is better? Is there a stud LT in the 2nd round? What stud F.A. LT we could get cheaper? Who right now on our team is better then Gross?

Don't get me wrong I would pay him 9 million for sure. Part of that is based on the fact that 3 years from now 9 million will be a deal for a great LT. Plus Gross has been steady and missed very few games in his career. Still when you guarantee almost half the contract you better make sure that he will deliver for years to come. If he had a career ending injury we would still be on the hook for the guaranteed money.

No from what i just read we have to either choose to Franchise peppers or Transition Gross. I think you can only use one "tag" an offseason so i think it is either we let peps go free and trnsition Gross or Franchise Peps and sign Gross

Well, once Gross signs his contract, then we Franchise tag Gross and still Transition tag Peppers!

It's still a Win/Win situation!

    • TBH, these are the kind of players that get weeded out of professional sports pretty quickly. Also, CMC is not that guy. There is zero indication that he isn't competitive.
    • I like the free agency. It actually helps basically all schools across the board. Pretty much only ancient HC's and/or HC's that haven't been able to adjust have been complaining about the free agency. Your fortunes can be made or broken every offseason. It's not like before where a bad recruiting class or two meant multiyear purgatory.  I will never understand all the bellyaching about the NIL. If you want to talk about what ruined college athletics, it has been naked greed. Conference expansions for TV revenue, ever skyrocketing AD and facilities costs and now the attempts to permanently ruin the postseasons(football and basketball).  All the kids did was get a very well deserved piece of a very, very, VERY broken pie.
    • Nobody is saying they don't count against the cap, because yes, they technically do count against the cap as it's money the team is paying and it needs to be accounted for. But what you're not grasping it seems is that if a player gets $10 million guaranteed in their contract, whether they get literally $0 as a signing bonus or $8 million as a signing bonus, it doesn't change the overall cap hit of the contract, because cap hits are about the guaranteed money, not how much is paid up front. The only thing that how much is paid up front changes, is how the cap hit can be spread out amongst the years. So yes, technically there could end up being a slightly bigger cap hit in year 3 and 4 due to a bigger signing bonus, but if that is the case, it also means there will be a lesser cap hit in years 1 and 2 than there would have been with a smaller bonus.  But over the length of the contract, the size of the signing bonus has literally zero affect on the overall cap hit of the contract, because THAT part of it is 100% about the guaranteed money and nothing else.
