My morning, part 2

Great story Nance. And great actions on your part. The guys who were actually there doing the fighting are truly the only ones who really know how much of their lives they sacrificed, the courage and bravery they held during those moments, and the hell they went through to protect and maintain the freedom we all enjoy and take for granted today.

Very Cool .....even before I got through the whole story and I got to the part of him saying "Can you believe they want $60 for that?!?" I immediately thought "I bet Nance picked it up for him on the way home."

Good stuff Nance, keep the updates and stories coming as you get them. I didn't serve but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate what it all means.

lol, you know me well ;-)

totally awesome stuff. my grand dad on my dads side was in WW2. Never heard one story out of him.

anytime you can sit with an old person, please do it. very enriching to both.

I agree, the wisdom and experience are priceless and can never be replace once they're gone...

Thanks bud.. He actually told me that he really didn't have any idea how big of a deal this was until nearly 40 years later when Regan was in office, and it was something he said and did that made people start realizing just what sacrifices were made... He told me that to that point, he'd never talked about it, because nobody had ever asked...

That is great Nance... I had the chance several times to sit and talk with my maternal grandfather about his experience in North Africa and Italy in WWII. Guys like this really are living legends.

My grandfather was in N Africa also... He told us a few stories when I was younger... Some of my fondest memories of him... He would show me his medals, and I can remember all these years later, the one I thought was the funniest was his "Good Behavior Medal"... lol And for those who haven't served, yes there is such a thing...

I used to deer hunt with a guy a long time ago who was in the North African Campaign who was captured by the Germans along with a buddy of his. He told me they were ready to shoot them both and for some reason the krauts let them both go - made motions for them both to get the hell out of there. Of course they both ran like scalded dogs and got back to the allied lines alive.

A different time - different people - all around.

That's really cool man. One of my biggest regrets is not asking my grandpa more about the war before he died(I was only 13). He joined the Army so he could have a hot meal everyday...how things have changed. He was involved in the invasion of Normandy but I don't think he was in the first wave. My mom said they took a trip to Europe a while back and they were on some sort of tour of the French countryside when they approached a river that he remembered setting camp close by. That must have been surreal.

If you come up with a way to send this guy to Iwo Jima, make a post, I'll donate for sure.

Yes, my grandfather didn't have any medals to show, but he was fond of telling the story of how he caught malaria over there and had to have a spinal tap aboard a medical ship... said that was not fun.

Great story to read when so there are so many fake Veterans out there panhandling.

I was taking to boat to the Magic Kingdom at Disney World a few years back when I noticed a guy wearing a WW2 Veteran hat. I struck up a conversation with him and he talked for a while about the battles in Europe. The stuff these men went through is amazing.

I agree with Wanderlai - WWII vets should get a free ride for the rest of their lives.

He was excited he got to give a speech to some local middle school kids... Told me he was on the news, which he was proud of... lol So, I looked it up... This clip isn't about him, but he's the veteran speaking in it... Thought I'd post it for you all to see...
