Buzz drafting...

...is bad drafting :sosp:

Drafting on 'buzz' often leads to mistakes

Every year, there are late risers who climb draft boards after working out well in shorts. Some awaken evaluators to strong tape and deserve to climb. Others rise for the wrong reasons, often because of impressive workouts, interviews or pedigree. The key to successful drafting is assigning the proper value based on talent. Following are some players who are considerably overvalued on some NFL draft boards and might struggle to produce to the level at which they are drafted...

This is how I feel about Gabbert. Seems like he came out of nowhere once the college football season came to an end.

That's reasonable, but the main reason you haven't heard a lot about Gabbert before the end of the season is because nobody thought he'd declare. When he got a first round grade by the draft advisory board he entered, taking everyone by surprise. Nobody but people at Mizzou expected him to leave before his senior season. There are some places you can find him ranked in "best underclassman quarterbacks."

He was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school, and many people expected him to excel this year after having a decent year last year. It just didn't come together at Mizzou this year on offense.

I think another reason for this is that after a guy has "arrived" as a known prospect the majority of time is then spent trying to figure out their limitations. These guys just showed up as a definite prospect and people are wowed by what they can do, and there isn't the time or the film to poke the same holes into the new guy.

To clarify, Gabbert's not in the article. The only quarterback mentioned is Christian Ponder.

It's not really talking about the highest picks. It's more about the "Mike Mamula" type that sneak into a higher round based on workouts when the game tape doesn't really support it.

The other names named...

- OL Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin

- DE Cameron Heyward, Ohio State

- RB Mikel Leshoure, Illinois

- C-G Mike Pouncey, Florida (that's a surprise)

- DE-OLB Brooks Reed, Arizona

    • If you need someone to run your multi-billion dollar business, maaayyyybe don't hire a guy whose previous work experience includes repeated blows to the head and literal brain damage but IDK.
    • Extrapolate that with every QB for that matter. I guarantee you there's quite a bit of missed opportunities and yards left on the field for everyone. Many NFL QBs deal with WRs not putting in A+ effort, subpar o-line play and other deficiencies. The great ones are able to rise above these issues and create opportunities for plays. Guys like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes can both play in and out of structure, as well as find ways to get yards when things break down and mask mistakes by throwing guys open, creating opportunities from nothing, etc. Bryce Young has only shown he's able to make things happen when the rest of the team picks up his slack. Very rarely does he create those opportunities himself. When this is a consistent pattern year after year with Bryce where he shows up lackluster, it's a concern. This is year three and he should be elevating the team as a first overall pick this franchise traded up for.  He was far from elevating anyone against JAX. In fact, he needed others to elevate and create for him. Excuses may be fine for a rookie, but this is year three for the first overall pick. Not looking good so far.
    • I think the worst issue is coaching. Countless bad snaps, XL not getting his feet in or trying on runs plays, our centre being down field when he didn't need to be. All seem to be from poor coaching for me. I believe Canales is to soft to rip the players a new one when the fug up. Plus I honestly believe that Canales is slow getting his plays in giving Bryce less time to diagnose and adjust to the defence. Don't worry I could of head butted Bryce for that fumble and the 4th down throw aways but the other plays are explainable to me
