Patrick Peterson is having a late surge

I'm getting this from different draft sites, ESPN, talk radio, etc. The anti-Cam crowd finally has coalesced around one main candidate and it seems to be Patrick Peterson. I haven't seen any actual reports of the Panthers leaning towards PP, but the chatter is there that a lot of people are really backing off Cam and propping up PP.

I'm gonna hate to see it happen if it does.

I just think it's idiotic to draft a cornerback that high, especially one that has been said to be more of a Terence Newman than a Darrelle Revis. Corners don't have that great of an impact on the game. The past three shutdown corners have been Revis, Asomugha, and Champ Bailey. Somebody remind me how many Super Bowl rings they have combined? The only one that has come close has been Revis, but the Jets had made the wise decision to draft a QB high. Jimmy Clausen and PP gets you nowhere.

This place has become uncivil and divisive because of certain potential draftees, but at the end of the day we will get:

A potential face of the franchise QB; or

A potential shutdown corner and special teams threat; or

A potential Smitty replacement and playmaker; or

A potential dominating interior presence on our D-line to team up with the proven kickass CJ and the up-and-coming Greg Hardy.

I am good with any of these scenarios really.

Yeah the only reason somebody would choose a prospect other than Cam Newton is to spite him and his supporters.

More then likely because of his size, PP will need to move to S in a few seasons any ways.

Size huh? Too tall i presume?

Gamble, Asomugha, Ike Taylor, Tillman, Talib, DRC, his brother, Mathis, Cox, Woodson... just to name a few that are 6'1" and taller, with a couple of those guys being listed at 6'2... but Peterson is 6'1 but is too big? Other than being heavier, he has proven his fluidity, speed and jumping so those nullifies that. The assumption he has to play safety in this league is preposterous. Woodson gets thrown in at safety here and there and if PP is good at that too, whats wrong with that?

When he gets older and less spry he will probably have to move

Again, another assumption. Maybe 8 years down or something, but if he were still here, then we can admit it was a great pick.

I will admit he isn't perfect, but I think he has the best chance to succeed in this draft. The real value of this draft will be in the 3rd thru 5th rounds.

The only two players in this draft that could make us an immediate contender are Cam and Bland, I do acknowledge that. My gut feeling is though, they may not prosper here, but that does have to do with my lack of confidence in Shula, at the moment.

I didn't say I didn't want him...

    • The OL has certainly been better than the trainwreck it was three or four years ago. As far as competitiveness let's apply some realism and clarity here. Quite a bit of the competitiveness in 2025 came from the defensive side of the ball which gave up the most points in league history the year before and was one of the bottom 5 units in terms of salary cap allocation for 2025 while the OL was top 3. We had the 26th passing offense last year. And if not for a herculean couple of games from Rico Dowdle we don't back our way into the division title or make the playoffs because we went 4-6 in our final ten games including being swept by the Saints who were starting a rookie 2nd round pick most of us mercilessly mocked when they selected him. In conclusion yes we've seen a difference. The question now is will the investment pay off the way we want. But the only way that happens is if we field a top 15 offense. If we can't even crack the top 20 then there need to be some very warm seats across the board. And I would hope just about anyone here should agree with that.
    • These Spurs are lowkey loaded.  If healthy, they could win it all this year (#2 in the West right now). I still think we’ve gotta keep Kalk on Wemby; he’s not getting completely dominated like every other NBA center.
    • Am I the only one who doesn't understand this fan bases infatuation with adding a high end TE? Especially when we have some bigger bodies in T-Mac and Coker who can slide into the slot at times and provide the big dependable target over the middle that most teams use their TE for. I mean, sure, it would be nice to have one of those elite TE's, but I feel like that's a position your better off going cheap with a committee who each bring something different to the table while spending our cap room on the more important positions. I like the potential we saw from Evans this year, Sanders could be a best if he can stay healthy, and Tremble has improved as well.  Just feels like spending high draft picks or cap space on other needs and more important positions is a better use of our resources than splashing on a TE in the draft or FA. Are those guys on the level of the Bowers or McBride's of the world?  Of course not, but we also are paying a fraction of the cost on our TE room than they are, and we're able to use that money for other needs.
