Rebuilding: A 2-year process

Kinda what I was thinking in another thread. Remember I posted that last night..and I was hammered drunk..Spring '11 is awesome.

A smart drunk! If Luck were on the table right now, the impending lockout would factor into the thinking as well. Does than mean we should consider Cam=Luck in every way? Hell no. You weigh the risk and the rate of return. THAT IS BUSINESS.

But you don't buy a stock in 2011 that is supposed to start paying off in 2012. Your money sits and does nothing to help you. You make your investments work for you now, and you enter into them when they offer the best opportunity for an immediate return.

I see the Panthers realizing this. I see Hurney doing the right thing. Dareus, baby.

but havent we been rebuilding already for a year or so? so technically we are behind than.

Yes! I agree. Although I might add that the demolition began a year ago--maybe not the rebuilding. I think JR pulled the trigger a bit soon, but we have not seen the plan unfold (if there is one).

I think your point is valid however if I saw the face of the franchise in this years draft it would be hard not to take him.I am not anti Cam and see the potential is great with him but I also see a enough red flags that I would pass on him as the 1st pick in the draft.I think the expectation for him to come here and turn poop into ice cream are a bit bloated. He needs a system that will allow him to develope for a year or two.I was not in favor of drafting Clausen but to throw him to the wolves the way they did was hard to watch.

My problem with your plan is not only have you given up on 2011 season but your playing with alot more risk then just drafting Cam.

1. Beason and group will not play to lose.

2. Ron Rivera is not playing to lose.

3. How many teams have gone back to back 1st overall pick.

4. Other teams might really suck worse then us. San Fran and Buff could be ahead of us not to mention teams that get hit by the injury bug.

I want the panthers to get a franchise guy at qb..but where we are drafting and not having a second round pick makes that decision difficult. There is not a franchise qb in this draft (IMO), therefore I would much rather draft a dalton or ponder in the second round if I was going to reach at QB. But since we don't have a second why not go BPA. Then, in next year's draft take a qb when there are more less-risk options (Luck, Brantley, Barkley, etc and this assumes that clausen/moore/pike all still suck, which is likely).

I think we will improve from 2-14 based solely upon the new coaching staff. So I don't consider luck as an option, but possibly barkley somewhere in the top ten.

So you end up better off in long run.

I'm not a newton guy but I like newton over Barkley. USC QB since Steve Sarkisian left not so good.

I honestly don't see how we can pass on a DT this year. With Luck coming in next year, us having the toughest schedule why not just play it safe and safe the QB pick for next year. We can give Clausen this season to try to prove himself. If he fails then Luck will be ours, if he is succesful then we wont be able to get Luck but then again we wont need him. I hate to see us pass on AJ Green and Julio Jones but I feel that Dareus is a player we cannot afford to miss and why take the risk with Newton? Rebuilding is a 2 year process so why not tank the season so we can rebuild with the best draft picks available?

There's not a single QB in this year's draft pool that I'd be comfortable starting right away.

The guy who's the closest mentally would be Ryan Mallett, but he's so foot-slow I'd be worried he might not handle the speed of the pro game well (and that's not even broaching the character issues).

Gabbert is such a quick learner, I think he would be ready half way into the season.

    • Bryce has improved each season, fwiw, statistically.  His slope is rising.  (Not to say I am high on him--I am not, but I have not given up on him--nor have I given up on XL, but damn he pisses me off)  CJ's slope is descending.   I was never a Penix fan.  Never, I say!
    • That is definitely the down side of all this--on paper, I would offer up a second rounder for him if he passed my interviews.  He has already gone through (seriously?) a treatment program for gambling addiction.  I just see him as a first round talent that we could get with a second rounder.  If I liked Bryce and felt good about paying him $50m per, I would not touch Sorsby.  If Bryce regresses or stays the same--he is going to expect to be paid.  Sorsby, in my view, has a better long-term future as an NFL QB.  He is big, mobile, has good arm strength, and makes wise decisions (on the field) with the football.  He is a great dual threat, RPO QB.   I think he is a perfect solution for the backup qb position and insurance for Bryce should he get injured or suck.  Pickett?  King?  yikes.
    • Hard to say--they are very unpredictable--this article came out last night---after our comments:  (ESPN)   How has the NFL approached NCAA players with gambling violations in the past? David Purdum, sports betting reporter: Quarterback Hunter Dekkers and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte were found to have committed gambling violations while playing college football, and both were allowed to pursue NFL careers. Dekkers was the projected starting quarterback at Iowa State but was ruled ineligible ahead of the 2023 season after an investigation found he had bet on at least one game involving the Cyclones (among other wagers that violated NCAA bylaws). The bet was just $15 on Iowa State to beat Oklahoma State in a 2021 game in which he did not play, but it led to the end of his Division I career. He played one season at Iowa Western Community College in 2024 before signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent, and he spent last season on the practice squad. Boutte was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in January 2024 on charges of underage betting while at LSU. The arrest came roughly eight months after he had been drafted in Round 6 by the Patriots, and the charges were ultimately dropped. According to police, Boutte placed more than 8,900 wagers from April 2022 to May 2023, including betting on at least 17 college football games -- at least six of which involved LSU during that span. The NFL did not discipline Boutte.
