that's fricken awesome! There had to be a way to get you both over there, hell, I'd wanna go too!!!! Media should get involved, I'm thinking he could be the brains and history behind a series in the local paper or something doing a documentary or something.

And yes, please keep the stories coming and 100%, if you can make something happen and need funding, I'm more than happy to help!!!

please tell him he has a Canadian fan, and we are more than grateful for his service!

One way or another I'm probably going to get the media involved... Either to cover the trip, or to try to get some help gathering cash to pay for it... One of my coworkers told me to make a Facebook group about it, and put up a link for donations to make it happen... That's kind of my last resort... First I want to see if American Airlines will help out on the flight to Guam... If they'll pick that up, or at least part of it, then this goes from a long shot, to a probable... And even if I can't go, I'm going to drop back and punt, and try to raise enough money to get him out there... I'm pretty excited, I think this can be done... I think it's something people will want to get behind... And if the corporate people won't help, I'm sure I can round up support... If 500 people give 10 bucks, well, there ya go... Doesn't sound all that impossible when thought of like that...

The Today show this morning had a segment about a group of WWII vets that went to the War Memorial in Washington for the first time ever. It was a very good piece. Something I found a bit shocking was that out of 16 million people that served, only 2 million are still alive and they are dying at a rate of 800 per day. It's a race against time of sorts to honor these people. Keep up the great work Nance.

Just got back from the donut shop this morning... No update worthy enough for a new thread, I don't think, but thought I'd share this with you...

There are actually a trio of vets that meet at the shop every morning at 730, and swap stories... Don clearly takes the lead for story telling... Well, Don is a bit disappointed all these years later, that he wasn't a recipient of any medals for valor after the fight... (funny disappointed, not angry disappointed)

So, keeping that in mind, I'll tell you the rest of the story...

He's talking to me about friends he'd lost, and guys that were wounded and had to be taken out, and I reach out and put my hand on his arm and say, "Don, you spent 36 days (every day of battle from beginning to end) on that island, carrying a flame thrower that makes it impossible to maneuver in, and an even bigger target. How on earth did you make it out of there without so much as a scratch?"

Don, who became a pastor after the war, tells me, "It had to be the hand of God, is all."

At that point his friend interrupted with (and this is classic)...

"I wish you had been shot, then maybe you'd quit whining about not getting a medal!"

LMAO!
