The final case for Cam Newton

Think about the top 5 QBs in the NFL right now: Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Big Ben, and Brees. I don't care what you say about Brady and Brees, they are all great athletes with cannons for arms that can make any NFL throw. You need someone with a certain level of physical talent to be an elite QB in this league. Hell, even the second tier of QBs are great athletes: Ryan, Freeman, Rivers, E. Manning, Schaub.

lol at Big Ben being top 5 and Rivers being second tier.

Cam is one step above "retarded". He doesn't even understand play development and reading defenses is a no-no for this guy. He has the physical tools but isn't a smart kid. Who knows if he has the ability to run an NFL team under center, I sure hope we don't find out.

No, Vince Young is one step above retarded. Cam is right around average, judging by the only hard evidence we have and how he sounds in interviews.

it annoys me when people say this.

Cam is likely a bit below average when it comes to the typical NFL qb intelligence, but QBs at that range have done okay in the past. While the game is extremely complicated, I'm not too worried about him being too stupid... the problem is more the amount of ground he has to cover compared to others.

I think we should and will pick Dareus....but after reading the crapola on this thread about Newton I will be happy to get him, just to see who eats the most crow.

1. Newton's character issues. To the best of my knowledge, these issues were all at UF. Well sometimes when you get in with a den of thieves, ,something rubs off on you. Not giving him a pass on this, but this has not followed him to Binn/Auburn.http://www.gainesville.com/article/20090614/ARTICLES/906149967

2. Newton is dumb. Yeah, dumb enough to pick up the offense at both Binn and Auburn in one pre-season and lead each team to the national championship. A team at Auburn that wasn't even rated in the top 25 going into the season.

3. Newton runs all the time. Down 24-0 at half, Newton threw 3 TDs and ran for 1 to lead Auburn to the biggest comeback ever in Tuscaloosa. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/ncaa/gameflash/2010/11/26/42831_recap.html

4. Georgia recruited Newton as a TE, so his biggest downside might be an all- pro career there.

Well I believe that argument is flawed.... I believe it's unfair to say "getting us nowhere" based on a sample size of a couple of seasons.... Now when we are the bills are some of these other garbage teams thats been garbage for ever then that makes sense..

Also since 08 we passed on sure first round talent QB's? Really?

2010 No first round pick.... first pick was offense -QB

2009 No first round pick.... so we did not pass on first round qb talent since we had no first round pick

2008 We drafted offense with Stewart and Otah.... The only QB you can say we passed on was Flacco... but it really was not a need and we got valuable pieces in the draft that year... We ended up going 12-4

So where are all these defensive picks and first round QB's we've been passing on since 2008?????? Please enlighten me!

The best teams force the issue when it comes to QB. You either trade up to get a franchise quarterback like the Jets did (which has worked out great for them) or you draft a QB when you still have a good one like the Packers did with Aaron Rodgers. Bad GMs like Marty Hurney just try to hope that a great quarterback will just fall into our laps. That hardly ever happens to a team that always goes 8-8/7-9. You have to take matters into your own hands and not be so passive.

Well I guess as Panther Fans we can get ready to have

a mentally less then average thief, liar and cheat as

the "Face of Our Franchise" in less then a week

And then with an abbreviated pre-season throw him in to

start game 1 for us. The NFL LB's will kill him.

Get ready to be drafting in the top 3 next year.

I have a question for everyone.

Why does everyone think a QB has to be successful the first year in the NFL? I do remember Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning having started games their rookie years and having terrible records. Honestly, QBs like Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco (who are successful first year and onwards) are very rare. If Cam is the pick, I think its asking too much to want him or any QB (even if Andrew Luck came out this year) to be lights out at the start. Any QB has gotta learn to play in the NFL.

Now the argument of can Cam Newton can learn an NFL offense is a valid one. I feel he can, but there are others that aren't so sure to don't think he can.

really, then why dont we keep clausen for another year?

    • In your opinion. What do you think Moton's true value in contract, dollars and guarantees? If we had not extended him, what is your plan for RT in 27 and 28? How important are good offensive linemen for our current offense? How much value do you put on protecting Bryce at this stage of his career? How difficult in general do you think finding above average tackles in the NFL is?
    • The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. Right tackle Kaleb Mcgary (who is the blindside protector for Penix since he is left-handed) is going to miss significant time, and it's looking more like it may be all season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-expect-kaleb-mcgary-to-miss-significant-time https://x.com/BKsquared7/status/1959285822236107013. Also, the top backup and swing tackle, Storm Norton (cool name BTW) is having ankle surgery and may miss half the season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-ot-storm-norton-out-6-8-weeks-after-ankle-surgery I don't root for injuries, but its also hard to be too sympathetic given how badly injuries have hit us in recent years. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.
    • That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
