Peppers is staying

For at least this year maybe.

I was going to make a thread earlier that said franchise pep, and let him play out the year. Something no one else proposed.

And with the talk from Hurney, it doesn't look like Peppers is going anywhere this year.

And this is really what I wanted to happen, franchise Peppers let him play out another season then franchise him again and then trade him. It's kinda very high risk/high reward but it would put the Panthers organization into a decent position. You have another year to try and build up the Dline through the draft, it absolutely kills our free agent money, but we never sign big name FAs anyway.

He doesn't want to play for us and never will again. If he stays it will be terrible for the team, I don't care how talented he is. We have all seen what he does when he doesn't want to play...he doesn't play and ends up with 2 sacks in a season. Get him out of here he has burned bridges already and teams know that if he plays where he wants to play then he will be one of the best in the league. We can get first rounders out of him and continue to build a young nucleus and maybe draft Mark Sanchez or even Matt Stafford if things go crazy at the draft (as they often do). Pep is as good as gone right now..

Totally agree with you. I like the way some folks think we are going to 'make him play'. he'd be a cancer in the locker room and a waste of cap money.

What about Peppers has ever led folks to believe he'd be a cancer in the locker room? He's never bad mouthed anybody. He didn't rip on the organization, coaches or players. He didn't blame anyone for making him want to leave. Somehow not wanting to be a Panther = an insult to some of you.

"Cancer" is a strong word but I have nightmares of him not getting traded and then pulling an 07 season with his 2.5 sacks...don't want that.

If Peppers doesn't get traded it will because no one thinks he is worth two first round picks or he fails to sign a long term contract with a team who is willing to pony up. In either case if he stays he would be incredibly stupid to stop playing or have a bad year. Everyone already wonders if he takes off plays and lacks motivation. What would they think if he had another bad year?

No he will play hard and do all he can. After all he will get 17 million dollars and will be playing to show everyone that 2008 was not the fluke, 2007 was. If he doesn't play for us or play well, then he will surely be unlikely to go anywhere and get half the money he thinks he is worth.

He knows that no matter how much he bitches and complains.

I wish I was that optimistic, I guess we will have to wait for this drama to unfold. but, if i was the owner it would chap my ass to pay someone 17mil who doesnt want to be a part of the organization. that just goes against the basic fundamentals of business...

Gross just today said he had his fingers crossed he stays. Doesn't sound like a cancer to me. That being said, my bet is he gets traded. But I wouldn't be devastated if he stayed this year...

of course thats the right thing to say. Hes prolly so high after signing his contract he doesnt know what hes saying.... i know i would.

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
