A company that stores credit card information has to be PCI compliant on all their computer systems. Those regulations are well known by all IT folks, as well as hackers. It would be easy to get past those defenses, if you know what you are doing.

Have they said how long it will be down? I would be willing to bet when it all gets back up and running they start charging for online.

They would lose a ton more customers if they decided to start charging now.. I know if they did start charging I might as well go xbox.

It depends on how they got in and what was really compromised. And while there are no foolproof defensive systems, it shouldn't be easy to access those card numbers.

I can't help but wonder if this is somehow associated with the RSA security breech that occurred a few months ago. Its not well publicised, but imo the RSA security breech is one of the most dangerous security breeches in the last ten years because so many use their security systems for access to the some of their most secure systems.

So far Sony has handled the PR side of this very well. Although, this meager offering isn't really enough to satiate my loathing for them right now.

Yeah it's a nice gesture but still lame that it's only 1 month of playstation plus because everything you get from there you will lose the next month unless you become a paying member..

I also see it as a way for sony to get more people to buy the playstation plus when it expires the next month.. so yeah it's a smart self serving move more than anything.

You lose access to all the perks such as cloud gaming, qore, and the games such as PS1 and Minis..But stuff like DLC and themes and other small things you get to keep I believe.
