NFL motion for appeal of stay denied

So...to idiots like myself, what does this mean right now? before Game 1? for the future of football?

Right now it means that the NFL is legally obligated to lift the lockout, as of right now.

I would say that it ensures we will miss no football this season, no matter how happy or unhappy the NFL, and the owners, are with it.

And, I think that it means the players just got an enormous amount of leverage in the negotiating.

Okay so we can have trades and free agency as soon as tonight or what?

Not necessarily, but the league year has to start. The NFL has to set up the year, and that takes a while. They can drag their feet as long as they can show they aren't stonewalling to the judge.

But won't the NFL have to return to business as usual until the 8th circuit court rules on their appeal?

Once again, legally that's supposed to be what happens, but from what Goodell and reps of the NFL have been saying all day, they might try and postpone and delay that happening as long as they can, preferably until the 8th Circuit has rendered their decision.

Nelson, who lifted the NFL lockout on Monday, has denied the league’s request for a stay on her ruling. The league wanted to keep the lockout in place and avoid starting the new league year until their appeal was heard, but Nelson was unmoved.

She wrote that the NFL “has not met its burden for a stay pending appeal, expedited or otherwise.”

The NFL continues to lose in the courtroom, which means we are getting closer to teams being forced to fully open their doors for business. The league is rapidly running out of legal maneuvers.

Judge ordered NFL to start its league year immediately, but said no team is obligated to sign free agents. Trades in question.

Also, per Adam Schefter:

So, the new league year is to start as of right now, I would assume.

They can't drag their feet for too long... if not for the lockout, which the court has lifted, the new league year would have already started and there would be FA and trades right now, so how can the owners justify not starting the new league year right away?

Lesson for the owners: good luck finding a court that will feel sorry for a bunch of billionaires claiming they don't make enough money in the middle of a recession.

It's more like: Good luck finding a liberal judge that's NOT going to rule in favor of a union.

This is why the owners feel confident that it will be overturned on appeal (because they will be standing in front of conservative judges).

    • For Bryce’s obvious shortcomings (bad pun), there is upside to his game. This isn’t being a homer or apologists, but I like to consider myself fair in criticism.  He’s far tougher than I ever thought he’d be. I really thought homie would have been broken in half by now. I don’t know how he’s not, but he’s not.  He is prone to turning the ball over early in games which digs a huge hole the team is not built to come back from, but dude DOES come up with crucial first down in crucial situations. It’s NEVER pretty, but he just kind of has the shining. He gets bailed out LOTS, and the team still loses games because of him, but he’s a bit of an enigma. He’s a turnover machine that is clutch in big moments.  He’s a smart/elusive cat. He kind of has to be with his limitations. His audibles are almost always correct and he understands coverages. I don’t see him getting fooled too frequently. His turnovers are almost never the ‘damnit Jake/Cam!’ brand we have been accustomed to. They are ALWAYS due to his size/strength limitations.  Strip sacks that shouldn’t be. Picks that happened because he just don’t got that NFL arm. He is still prone to panicking and the wheels can and do fall off at a much higher rate than his peers.  The team is winning on the backs of the defense, running game and special teams… but they’re winning, and unbelievably 1 game behind Tampa. As long as this is happening and Bryce doesn’t go full meltdown, Dave is going to keep him in. He is not getting pulled.
    • This was a terrible podcast. A bunch of uninformed homers that had worse takes than the bottom 10% of the Huddle. I listened to a handful of podcasts this past offseason in search of new Panthers material since John Ellis doesn't do his pod anymore and The 4 Man Rush don't either. Immediately deleted it after the handful I listened to. Truly terrible.
    • The NFC South was so bad it sent a team with a losing record to the Playoffs that year. Wilks had players playing hard at the end but let’s not act like that was a good season. That season hurts even more now that we see in hindsight how good our QB situation was. We just didn’t know it.
